Your carburator sounds like it is too rich it needs adjustement try turning the adjustement screws in all the way and back them out 1 and 1/2 turns and adjust from there

Check with a voltmeter on the battery/ With engine shut off read the battery voltage, start the engine and read the voltage it should rise above what it was when engine was shut off
Provided it still has the orginal engine here is the service manual for the Onan Engines P48G and the P220G. Starter info start on PDF page 185 (manual page 60-1)
your going to need to check the carburetor. sounds like your fuel sys is contaminated. when you unplug the fuel solenoid the plunger pops up and cuts the fuel off. the solenoid is used to shut off fuel to keep the unit from back firing
