Question about Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom Motorcycles

1 Answer

My harley sportster 1200 looses power shortly after riding. Starts to run rough and the speedometer cuts out at the same time. Doesn't quit and at a stand still it will rev up and maintain. Could this be a control module getting warm issue?

It could be. But, it could just as easily be a blocked air filter. This is more likely as the machine continues to run. A heat issue on the ignition system would cause it to cut out and stop, until it cools down.

SOURCE: Speedo, turn signals, brake lights, horn stopped working. All else is fine.

Gap your plugs to 38 thou. Check all your bulbs (one burned out will affect the rest) Take a look at all your fuses and make sure they are all ok. Otherwise you are probably looking at a wiring short which will require trouble shooting of the elctrical system. Buy your self a service manual for your bike, this will help you a lot.

Sporster speedometer keeps cutting out

First thing to check and is usually the problem is the Negative battery terminal on the battery. When they come loose they will start arcing as well and will build up carbon on the battery connection and the connectors hooked to it. If it is loose, check and remove any carbon build up on them (chip, sand, file, grind, etc. etc.).

2003 harley 1200 sportster won't start when warm tuns over no spark just changed coil no difference starts right away when cold

Hi Curtis, the CKP sensor needs compression to send correct signal to the ICM/ECM, make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Battery voltage below 8.7 volts, loose or broken battery cables especially ground cable to frame.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
6. Failed CKP, CMP, MAP or BAS sensor.
7. Faulty ignition switch.
8. Security alarm failing to disarm.

8. Water or dirt in fuel system, carburetor or filter.
9. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carburetor vent line closed off.

I would check both spark plugs then check the timing and if not fixed check the coil to see if it is bad.

Under power my tachometer jumps and the speedometer goes dead on my 2003 sportster 1200.

I had the same thing on an 08 883C and on it's first run too. Cause was metal scurf lodging in gearbox speedo sensor, disabling it. Tacho kept going as it's separate. Your engine warning light may also show. I suggest check your oiltank level, and if OK, ride home and arrange to change gearbox oil. This may fix it. If not the sensor can be changed for a small price.
