Question about 2001 Honda VF 750 C Magna

1 Answer

2001 Honda Magna 11K miles. Put new Michellin Commander 2 tires on, I get a horrible wobble at 40-45mph and just a small one at other speeds. The tire has been balanced twice and it never did this with the old tires. What could be the problem? Is the tire defected? That is the only thing I can come up with. Barrings are good everything is tight throughout the neck and forks. Thanks for any help on this.

SOURCE: Violent shake while cornering at lower speeds

hello and welcome
a couple of things that need to be inspected. the steering head bearings. with the bike supported you can check for free play with the steering stem and its holdings.
another is the rear tire. seems funny but vibrations and handleing i have seen do transfer from the rear at times. and if the tire may be out of balance it can throw the front tire wear off as well.
and another of course is the fork freeplay. as you r the dealerships should have inspected is the fork bushings. they have a teflon coating and if they wear down they can develop a clearance that results in bad front end handleing and tire wear. between any of those items you should be able to find the culprit. thank you.

I too have had the same issue with my 1987 GL 1200 and found this info on MCWorld.com really helpful: http://www.mcnews.com/mcn/letters/Letters10032.pdf

SOURCE: 2001 Honda Shadow Sabre 1100, Going to look at

Here is the "Blue Book"
http://www.kbb.com/motorcycle/trade-in/2001/honda/vt1100c2-shadow-1100-sabre/238203

Seems to be a bit over priced. I would ask the owner straight up why he is asking over $1,200 more than blue book value. (add ons? )
Also call your insurance agent and ask them what the full coverage replacement value is.

Are there maintenance records?
Has it ever been in an accident?
Why the new windshield with only 14 K miles?
Owner's manual with the bike?
When was it last registered?
Exhaust pipes chrome or Dark Blue? Dark Blue = been run hot or high RPM for extended period
What color is the engine and transmission oil? Does it smell like oil or have a burned smell?

Last thing to keep in mind... is ask yourself.. 14 K miles or 114K miles? While your looking at it. Title in the persons name that is selling you the bike?

There are many many more things to consider...including your own driving experience. There are 2 kinds of motorcycles......
Those that have been DOWN
and Those that are waiting to go Down. Either from falling off a foot rest or accidents. I have owned many motorcycles since 1970. Every motorcycle has their own story to tell... some good, some bad.

SOURCE: My front tire is fairly new, no signs of wear yet.

I would also check that the front yoke is adjusted correctly and that the back swing arm is not loose.

If your steering wheel rocks back and forth or behind you feels like a woddling duck it is your tires... most likely a seperated belt.

Tire was either not balanced properly, or wheel is bent.

Steering Wheel Wobble

Have you tried cross checking with another wheel alignment specialist? To me it seems to be coming from the tyres or a dented rim. You could ask them if they do dynamic wheel balancing on the car itself. This will take in consideration the out of round of the hub as well.
Let us know if there is any change.
Cheers.
