Question about Motorcycles
Hi there i have a 883 1989 xl sporster, now it has started to Loose power when hot it gets a distinct pinging noise in the tops, and starts to sound wierd, the bike is stock no modifications... what can i do to fix it?
Check the fault codes if you can. Check that the tank cap is venting properly as the noise you are hearing is detonation from either incorrect ignition timing or the air - ratio is out because of a lack of fuel getting into the main jet or the injectors which ever you have.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the help, but i just cant get the noise to go away, i think that it might be the lifters or rollers, the problem is only there when engine is hot after running for 10-15 miles at 60+ mph, and you know sportys are just so much fun at those speeds..."
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Check the battery for proper voltage and then check the main fuse. Check the battery voltage with the switch in the "on" position.

If you're lucky it might be the speed sensor located in the gearbox casing. This is a hall effect device and is magnetic and so can pick up metal fragments from the inside of the gearbox. I have a 2001 Sportster and the Sensor is located on the top of the gearbox casing, just below the starter. I'd expect it to be in a similar position on a later bike such as yours, but I can't be sure. Once you've located it, take it out (can be a bit fiddly) and make sure that its clear of any debris. If not the sensor, you're probably going to need to substitute in a working speedo. Be careful because a pre-2004 speedo is electronic, but is not compatible with 2007 bike. Best of luck!

Try this site. http://www.bikebandit.com/1996-harley-davidson-xlh883/o/m1785#sch144247 The diagram is for a 1996 model but it is the same as all Keihin CV carbs on Harley Sportsters.

I'd check the battery first. I've seen the post break loose from the batteries in many Sportsters and leave them dead on the road. I've only seen this happen once on a Big Twin. Why? I have no idea. If nothing on the bike works, this may be the problem. If everything else works but it just won't start, I need more information. Does the starter engage and the engine turn over?
