Hi Anonymous, it sounds the like starter drive/clutch has gone south, it has components inside, that when spinning, centrifugal forces cause them to grab or lock into permanently fixed counterparts. The gear only spins one way and locks the other way. If you have one that spins both ways it has failed and needs to be replaced. Please visit the web site below for more help and good luck.

sounds like starter is pullin' alot of juice away from the ignition..this can also happen if your battery is less than test this try jumpstarting with donor vehicles engine NOT running...if she fires right up then try charging your battery fully and if still won't handle it, time for a new battery...good luck to you friend...Tim

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're asking. I see a mention of two starters and a battery. Is the starter not turning the engine over or is the engine turning over but not firing? One thing you did say was "you were jumping the bike off in COLD WEATHER one day". How cold was it? If the battery was dead and the temp was below say 30°, the battery could have frozen. When this happens, it shorts out on the inside. You could have a cell shorted out internally in the battery and only getting 10 volts or so out of it. Connect a volt meter across the battery the next time you try to start it. If the voltage falls below 11 volts, buy a new battery.

Good luck

SOURCE: Starter is ingaging but not but ingaging flywheel

The way the solenoid it designed, the starter gear MUST engage the ring gear in order for the starter to start turning. The plunger inside the solenoid has to go all the way forward in order to make electrical contact to start the motor.

Now, that doesn't mean that the starter gear WILL turn the engine. It sounds like you've got a bad "over running" clutch. When these units go bad, you can hear the starter motor running but the engine is not turning over.

Now, here's the rub on that. If you have the abilitiy to remove the starter, disassemble it, and replace it, you can save yourself some money. If not, you're better off simply replacing the starter.

The part cost about $100 but the time it takes to put it in will quickly eat up any savings you might have by repairing the starter rather than replacing it. Labor rates are high these days.

Good Luck

SOURCE: 2006 H-D Sportster 1200 roadster. The starter

this is caused by a bad starter solenoid, or a bad starter switch. first check the switch with a meter and make sure it is releasing contact. if the switch checks out good -- then the solenoid is at fault and needs to be replaced.

What is the widest tire fitment for rear 2004 1200 roadster?

I really don't know how wide you can go but I never recommend going any wider than the stock tire without modifying the bike to accept a wider tire. The problems you will run into is rubbing the final drive belt and the tire rubbing under the fender when you hit a bump. I'd stay with the original size tire.

Good Luck

1988 1200 sporster i hear tapping in rocker box sounds like therre loose also when first started misses on one cyclender after one minute runs fine

Sounds like you have a bad hydraulic lifter. It's acting like a solid lifter with too much clearance until it pumps up with oil.

When trying to start the bike (1989 1200 sportster) sometimes there is no connection, sometime a clicking sound, and sometime it engages.

This sounds like a bad starter relay -- that is what is making the clicking noise -- it sounds like it has burned contacts which sometimes connect and sometimes don't.

More info, let me know.

2004 1200 r oil light came on killed the starter fulll of oil?

The oil light should come on when you turn the key on, then go out when the engine starts. It is NOT an oil level light, it shows PRESSURE.

Your "click" is a bad/corroded connection on the starter terminals , battery terminals, low battery, bad wires, or a defective solenoid. Charge the battery. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive. Remove the nuts holding the wires to the starter, clean all connections at the starter, frame and battery with a wire brush. Get them CLEAN!! Make sure the big cables are in good shape. If that doesn't fix it, you will need a solenoid. Maybe a starter and/or relay too.
