It's very possible that you won't find it on the flywheel, I would use camshafts to verify TDC since that's really all you can do with today's 4 strokes.

How do i set timing chain on sprockets ,ie top dead centre.

I don't know what car you have, so here's what was needed on mine:
1. Bring engine to Top Dead Center, ready to fire #1. There should be a mark on the front pulley or on the flywheel. Move cams to the TDC mark, too. My car was twin cam, the front cams needed to face apart, and set the marks....

Yours may be different.

Where should the crank pulleys mark stand for tdc.i got the timing on the flywheel spot on and number 1 valves are firing but the car does nt perform as it should.please help.its a 1987 vw passat cli 2,2

The marks on the pulley or flywheel will be TDC for top dead centre . correct ignition point is before TDC normally around 10 degrees and there will be a mark on the housing before the TDC point. You have effectively timed the spark in a retard situation and you need to get it advanced

I believe that is an overhead valve engine. that the valve cover off and turn the crank until both Intake and exhaust valves are closed. That is TDC

Top dead center

very simple remove the spark plug, on the right side of the engine there is a case cover, remove it, there is a flywheel there, put a screwdriver gently into the spark plug hole ,rotate the engine slowly by hand, the piston will travel up and then briefly stop and go back down , the piont where it reaches the top is tdc, make note of any marks on the flywheel this is a timing mark, that goes with tdc for the piston.

How do you find top dead center on a yamaha1984 ytm200e

there will be a small line marked "T" on the flywheel that will be seen through the timing hole .
You can make certain by placing a pencil or similar down the spark plug hole and moving the flywheel. the piston will push the pencil to its highest point at TDC

I have a 2003 yamaha ttr 225. tring to set the timing ,question for top dead center what mark out of 3 do i use? on the sid it looks like I--I I what mark is top dead center?

remove the sparkplug then:
rotate the engine until all the vaves in the cylinder are closed (maximum exit air pressure at the sparkplug hole) then: place a pencil or, wire in the sparkplug hole and, rotate the engine forwards and, or backwards until the wire is at it's highest point (about to start back down) this will be tdc. (top dead center)

Valve timing marks

Valve adjustment is performed with the piston at top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke. On the flywheel, there's a "T" mark that indicates TDC. Align the "T" mark and check that all of the valves are closed (this is where they must be to check and/or adjust the valve tappet clearances). If they are not closed, rotate the crankshaft one full turn, aligning the "T" mark again. Now the vwill all be closed.

Need a picture or diagram of top dead center/86' honda prelude 2.

From what I see in my manual,

1.There is a Timing Pointer on the back of the engine. There is a White mark on the flywheel. The white mark must line up with the timing pointer, for Number 1 piston to be at Top Dead Center.

2.Facing the engine, looking at the camshaft sprocket. The sprocket has spokes. On one of those spokes is the word, "UP" in raised letters, or there is a small Dot. As you can see here, the spoke with the word UP goes -> Up.
(Same thing of course if it is a Dot, instead of UP)

On the back of the camshaft gear, (Sprocket), are marks. On the edges of the camshaft gear. These line up with the top edge of the cylinder head. The surface of the cylinder head, where the valve cover bolts down to.

I'm sorry, at present I do not have a website, that I could link you to for a diagram, or photo.

Timing 1980 vw pickup

You can remove the #1 spark plug and get the piston at top dead center, (all the way up in the cylinder). You can also check the access hole in the top of the transmission housing, to line up the TDC timing mark on the flywheel to the transmission housing. The mark on the crank pulley is rather hard to see, just a little mark "V'ed" into the pulley lip.

2001 kia optima 2.5L setting the timing

TDC stands for Top Dead Center, however it is only to set the cylinder number ! at TDC, if yu know where the timing marks are align the crank pulley mark to the "0" of the timing mark, usually this can be achieved by setting the crank shaft doel pin to twelve 0 clock position.
