However when I turn the heat on it does not allow the car to heat up immediately, then when my windows are fogged up it takes time to clear the windows what could this be. thank you


It takes time for an engine to warm up. The heat from the heater comes from the water running through the engine. If the engine is cold, it will take a while for the heater to work. If the engine has a thermostat problem, it takes even longer. The thermostat is not supposed to open until the engine is heated up. If it stays open, the cold water takes a lot longer to heat up. A quick check is when the engine is cold, start it up and with the radiator cap off , have a look in at the radiator water. it shouldn't be flowing as the thermostat shouldn't be open. If the water is flowing on a cold engine, I would say the thermostat has jammed open and that's why its taking so long to heat up.

My heater blows hot for a couple minutes then turns cold. After turning it off for a few minutes and back on, it blows hot then goes cold again.


LET YOUR CAR WARM UP FIRST!! or you risk the chance of over heating and casuing engine damage. start your car let it warm up for 5 to ten minutes and then try the heat. also when you start you should NEVER have heat on right away. the heat that you feel comes from the engine. and if the engine is cold and you are trying to heat it up it will put stress on the engine and over heat. ALL cars have to wait for their heat. that's why you see peoples car running in the morning with no one in it. so when they do get in it they have heat. heat will not work until the engine is warm.

The overheating and lack of cabin heat both point to a failed engine thermostat which would be stuck closed. At the warm up stage, the coolant stays in the engine block to bring the engine to efficient operating temperature, then it opens and circulates the coolant through the radiator and heat core. If the thermostat is stuck closed, the engine will overheat, and coolant will never reach the heater core, and you will not get cabin heat.

Blinking oil light at idle which goes away during driving could be a low oil level, but may also be a drop in oil pressue. You could have a clogged oil fliter (at best) pickup tube, or a failing oil pump.

Good question: The thermostate acts as a valve (of sorts) allowing the engine to stay at a relative constant temp. If run without an engine will typically run too cool (this is not good as engines are designed to run at specific heats for best efficiency and motor oil too is designed to run a a designed heat. An engine can go the other way too and over heat. As mentioned the thermostate acts like a valve controling the flow of coolant thru the block and radiator. The run thru block is a long one and it will certainly pick-up heat however running without may cause the coolant to run too quickly thru the radiator so little heat will be lost. (imagine a lit candle run your finger thru it quickly and no heat exchange as it you will not burn your finger, slower you'll get the heat from the candle and burn your finger. In short use a thermostate, your engine was trully engineered to have one.

To warm the passenger cabin of your car, your car?s heating system makes use of excess heat from the engine?s internal combustion process. A car?s engine, in fact, when in operation produces so much excess heat that if the excess heat is not removed, it would destroy the engine. It is your car?s cooling system that removes that dangerous excess heat. Some of an engine?s excess heat is released through the exhaust. Most of an engine?s excess heat is absorbed by a circulating liquid coolant, which is a mix of water and antifreeze. The heated liquid coolant is carried from the engine through hoses to the radiator, which transfers the heat from the coolant to the outside air. That heat transfer lowers the temperature of the liquid coolant, which is then circulated back to the engine to absorb excess heat again. Whereas the radiator is located at your car?s front grill, the unit that transfers heat to the passenger cabin is located inside the dashboard. This unit is something of a mini-radiator and is referred to as the heater core. Heated liquid coolant circulates through tubes in the heater core and a heater fan blowing across those tubes, as well as through little fins encasing the tubes, directs warm air through heating vents into your car?s passenger cabin. Because your car?s heating system works off of its cooling system, heating system malfunctions are often caused by problems in the cooling system.

Sounds like a thermostat problem to start with. Follow the top rad. hose to the engine. You will have to bleed the system of air after.
