I have not seen all the motorcycles in the world ... of those I have encountered ... ones I have owned, those owned by others, the ones I have worked on, seen in show rooms and used bike lots ... read about or seen pictures of in magazines ... ALL have had a fuel petcock. But that has only been between the '60's and today. It is possible yours could be the exception or it could have been removed by a previous owner. Please let me know what happens as this case unfolds. Thank you and thank you for your interest in FixYa.com

SOURCE: Fuel shut off valve

Recent shut off valves don't have an off position anymore it's been replaced with PRi which is prime..The petcock lever has a long side and a short side.w/long side pointed down that is ON..long side up that is RESERVE..halfway between is PRIME which is used when cycle has sat for a long time or has run out of gas...off is not used anymore cause the petcock is vacuum actuated and only lets gas flow when engine is running...except for PRIME, these should all be printed/stamped on your petcock...Good luck to you friend....Tim

SOURCE: HD 1979 fatboy fuel petcock valve leaking

Replace the petcock. The rubber diaphragm is ruptured. I'd also bet your fuel mileage dropped cause the ruptured diaphragm is allowing raw fuel to be sucked into the intake manifold.

SOURCE: motorcycle shuts off as I

If your messing with the petcock and it starts up Iam thinking clogged petcock...maybe remove the gas, lines and pull the tanks. look inside for chips or peeling gas tank liner. clean it out add a screen to the petcock.

SOURCE: The motorcycle will run in the on position of the

problem is probably the fuel petcock try this test disconnect the fuel line and get a good length of clear line enough to reach a container hook it up to the petcock and turn the petcock in the on position and observe the flow of fuel to see if it is flowing freely try this in the on and the reserve position.
if it id restricted remove the petcock and clean the obstruction of rebuild or replace it.

SOURCE: what does it mean when riding an ultra classic

Sounds like a main circuit breaker problem. There was a service bulletin for a breaker upgrade.

Harley-Davidson Service Bulletin M-1151: Main Circuit Breaker Replacement~Purpose: As recently advised in ML-390, Harley-Davidson has determined that a defect exists on certain 2001-2003 FL Touring and Police model motorcycles. These motorcycles have a condition whereby the 40 amp main circuit breaker could open due to reasons other than for which it was designed, causing an unexpected interruption of all electrical power. This condition could cause a “quit while riding” situation, which could occur without warning and lead to a crash, thereby presenting a risk of death or injury to the rider.

This Harley-Davidson safety recal (code 0113) affected to the following motorcycle: Certain 2001-2003 FL Touring and Police model motorcycles, including FLHTCI, FLHTCUI, FLTRI, FLTRSEI-2, FLHPI, FLHPEI and FLHTPI, assembled/shipped from the York, Pennsylvania assembly plant between May, 2000 and September, 2003.

What is button on gas tank for?

It's the fuel petcock switch. Here are some pictures of it: https://www.google.ca/search?q=2004+kawasaki+vulcan+1500+fuel+petcock

Fuel petcock valves are common on motorcycles which don't have a dedicated fuel level gauge. They are use to turn the fuel tank "on" or "off", and they also have a "reserve" position which taps into a section of the fuel tank which contains reserve fuel to allow you to make it back to a gas station should you run out of fuel in the "on" position.

Hi, Kitty for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. I just got a 1996 harley hertiage softtail--does it have a reserve tank valve? since ther is no gas gauge?

If your bike does not have a fuel gauge it's probably not fuel injected either. If this is the case, you should have a reserve setting on your fuel petcock unless it has been changed. Look closely at your petcock. It should have "on", "off", and "res" on it somewhere but the letters will probably be pretty small.

The '96 models were the first model to have the vacuum operated petcock and they were notorious for giving problems. Your petcock may have already been changed due to this. If not, I'd recommend installing a high quality manual petcock like a PIngle. They aren't cheap but it beats being stranded with a full tank of fuel in the tank but none in the carb.

Good Luck
Steve
