Question about Yamaha XV 535 Virago DX Motorcycles

1 Answer

Bad cdi Hello, My 535 virago keeps blowing the regulator, and I've been told the CDI box could be the cause, so I have found some online, but they have different numbers on them. My Virago is '88, and the numbers on my CDI box are 'J4T020, 71 2GV-20" Whereas I found some CDIs from younger models and it says 'J4T033, 71 3BT-00" The question is, do the numbers on the CDI box have to match? or Can I get the CDI from a younger model? Thanks

Cdi box, I keep blowing them after installing i get about 5 minutes and then lose spark to 2 of the 3 coils on my 2005 Yamaha Vector. Help

I had the same problem with my 2006 Vector. Blown 4 CDI units. Changed out complete wiring harness and Stator, new plugs, Carbs. We narrowed it down to the coils. They were for an RX1 (based on the part number). swapped out with OEM vector coils. installed new CDI.. Sled is running flawless now.

Hi the main fuse blew on my 1995 535 virago tried to replace but keeps blowing any ideas ? thanks

Sounds like you have a short somewhere. Check that all your connectors and wires are in good condition with no insulation worn through. Also check that all your connections are tight.

There is a good manual with free tech support for your Virago 535 at:

92 virago 750. Front cylinder runs intermittently. Coil is good. I cleaned carbs. Suspect CDI. Seems to run fine until it warms up. I recently put new Voltage Regulator in. Stator is not shorted. and...

You have to test all the electronics on the bike to figure out if you have a bad CDI box. A CDI box can test good and still be bad. Your problem sounds more like a bad spark plug cap. Unscrew the cap from the end of the wire and take an OHM reading on the cap. If it is higher or lower than 5000 OHMs replace the cap . A plug cap from NGK runs about $5. Replace them both for about $10 it should take care of the problem.

I have a 1985 xv700 virago. one of my plugs are misfiring. I had issues with my original one. yamaha dealer told me i needed a new cdi box. He sold me a used cdi igniter box from a non running 1985 Yamaha...

follow the plug wire back to the coil and see if there are any breaks, if not might switch coil with the other one and see if the other plug now misfires, if so replace the coil, most cdi problems are not intermittent, typically they either work, or they dont.

The engine is firing on one cylinder and when the throttle is openend up it fires both is this a bad cdi box or coil, how can I check them without taking it to the shop

Clean the carb on the bad cylinder. It may have a plugged pilot jet. The bike has CV carbs. There is a chance that the offending carb may have a pin hole in the diaphragm causing one slide to open later than the other slide. This could also be the problem. With the air cleaner removed, look at both carb slides and see if they crack open at the same instant or if one is definitely later than the other. That will confirm or eliminate the diaphragm.
