Question about Harley Davidson FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic Motorcycles

Lifter clicking? How do I stop lifter clicking. I got good oil pressure. I had someone at a local shop adjust my push rods, it wont stop its driven me insane....... It started like a week ago I was driven down the highway and all of a sudden the bike just shut off noticed my oil was pretty low. I got some blowback so I think my rings may be getting weak. IDK the clicking is driveing me insane other then that the bike seems to be running great.

You could have bad Valve stem seals which would allow the oil to be drawn into the cylinders and not have any ring problem. I suspect a weak valve spring or bad hydraulic lifter if so equipped. With an overhead valve engine, the valve springs AND the valve stem seals can be changed by pressurizing an individual cylinder to hold the valves in place, removing the valve train and compressing the valve stem springs with proper tools. I am not familiar about your engine construction, sometimes the lifters can be changed at the same time if the heads are designed to allow this. Basically you are working on the top side of the motor without needing to remove the heads. The only thing you will not be able to do is LAP the valves.
A good working air compressor and an adapter for the sparkplug hole will be needed.

Having a "clicking" sound coming from engine, or dull "thumping"


could be anything from belt noise to lifter tick to rod knock..lifter tick is under the valve covers..rod knock sounds like hitting the block with a hammer..if its rod knock see what your oil pressure is.. should be around 30 to 45 psi cold..warm will be as low as 15..depending on oil type..most lifters can be adjusted by removing the cover and doing adjusting depending on the vehicle..good luck

Hi Anonymous, this models valves are non adjustable but you have 4 options:
1. with engine at operating temperature do a quick series of 5 throttle revs to 1000 RPM'S below red line.
2. Try an engine oil additive Liquid Molly Tappet Stop Noise or Risoline Engine Treatment.
3. Cut out stock push rods with bolt cutters, remove suspect lifter, disassemble lifter and clean with carb cleaner and compressed air especially under the lifter check plate, reassemble and install, replace push rods with Taper Lite Adjustable push rods.
4. Buy new lifters.

1. with engine at operating temperature do a quick series of 5 throttle revs to 1000 RPM'S below red line.

3. Cut out stock push rods with bolt cutters, remove suspect lifter, disassemble lifter and clean with carb cleaner and compressed air especially under the lifter check plate, reassemble and install, replace push rods with Taper Lite Adjustable push rods.

I have intermittent lifter clatter in a 06 ultra generally after sitting for a few days, i realize that lifters do bleed down and im sure that is what is happening. i know that even h-d sent a tech tip...

2003 dodge ram has light tick for a minute at cold start then goes away


The 'light tick' is most probably a valve lifter. The valve lifters in the engine are hydraulic, and are pressurized by the engine's oil pump.
When the engine gets some mileage, say 60 or 70 thousand miles or more, the engine is just not as tight as it once was. What happens is that the lifter loses its pressure when the engine is not running, because there is some wear. When you start the engine, the lifter takes a few moments to pressurize, and makers a ticking noise until it does. The 'ticking' is the sound of the valve being hit by the push rod, which is being pushed by the lifter. Once the lifter is pressurized, the 'ticking' sound stops. This is a very common thing for engines, it will eventually happen to nearly every one.
Sometimes, thin, old oil can cause this. If you have not changed the oil/filter in a while, you should do it now.

This is nothing to really worry about right now, but it is a sign of engine wear. Just be sure to run the proper oil in the engine, and do all the proper maintenance.
