Question about Motorcycles

1 Answer

Hi i have a 2008 ninja 500r with anout 10800 miles on it. I was riding about 2 days ago and at a stop light, when the light turned green i gave it throttle but nothing happen. It would just idle. I pulled the bike over to the side and thought it needed fuel so i waited. Turned the bike on and rode it perfectly fine to a gas station. I was riding it today and i was accelerating out of 2nd gear into 3rd and my bike made a loud sound and got louder as the revs went up so i got onto the side of the road quickly and now the bike wont start. Ive already tried the battery. Now ot wont start. When i try to start it it sounds like it was to start but wont. Please help!

SOURCE: bad battery

Don't rely on on whether the bike will start at a gas station to determine if the charging system is working. Get the multimeter out and do a proper test. Should be getting about 14.5 volts @ around 3K RPM. It's too easy of a test to to just skip. If it is charging then start looking for something else. Was the new battery properly charged to begin with? Loose battery connection? I suppose the GPS could be too much but you said that it was dying last november, so I would suspect something else. P.S. you need a properly charged battery to get an accurate reading for the charging test.

sounds like you killed the starter relay. If it takes a lot to start a bike eventually the contacts can weld themselves "open" causing the starter to continue cranking which would explain the sound you heard at the red light.

Pull the float bowl caps off the carbs and then spray carb cleaner into the main jet and all other accessible ports on the carbs. Chances are there is a build up of water condensation in the carbs.

I have had my gear plates fixed and I've not been on my bike for 2 weeks and all the plates have stuck again is this normal?

Hi, Sharon it shouldn't be, especially with a brand name like Kawasaki, from all the research I've done it would appear this is the norm for this model, you may want to try a set of Barnett Clutches to see if that helps otherwise daily riding or starting and gear engagement should keep this issue at bay. Im trying to put my vulcan 500 carbs on a ninja 500r it runs for a few min then wont start again till next day is it carb adjustment or valve adjustment i need to do

Hi, Jason and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched or kinked.
8. Carburetor float stuck.
9. Fuel injectors clogged.
10. Severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
11. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
12. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
13. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or sensors (MAP, CMP, CKP, O2, TPS, ETP, IAC,or BAS).
14. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
15. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
16. Faulty CDI box if applicable.
17. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
18. Security system not disarming alarm needs a reset.

Problem getting bike into gear while riding

If the problem only happens when the bike is cold, the oil could be the problem. If the clutch lever has excessive endplay, the clutch needs to be adjusted.

My 2008 Ninja 250 tires to start itself

The switch is the most likely source of the problem. Check it with a volt ohmmeter. Put the key in off and check the terminals. Next turn the key to the 1st position and check the terminals then on any further positions. The next time the bike self starts is when you want to re-check the switch terminals.

You know, this has all the signs of an internal short in the switch. Just tell the dealer to give you a new switch. Switch failure after 5 hours of riding is simply unacceptable.
