You have a short, its either in your wiring or some kind of sensor or circuitry that is malfunctioning due to over heating, vibration could be causing it to ground out, corrosion, a faulty circuit board, or just a loose wire. Chasing it down will be make your hair fall out, pay a good mechanic to fix it.

My 2007 harley fatboy will quit when it gets hot on occasion. will restart and rum fine for 100 miles or so then quit again

Have you checked for any error codes?

To actually get to the diagnosis mode (to read error codes):

1- Turn motorcycle ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch to RUN.
Push odometer reset button in & hold.
Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting will illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word "diag" should then appear.
Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.
Turn motorcycle ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch to RUN.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting will illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word "diag" should then appear.
4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.
5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carburetor])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer
6 - To get the DTC in an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC's the code will be displayed or the word "none" will appear if there are no DTC's. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.
7 - Record the codes.
8 - If DTC's are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed. NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC's again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.
9 - Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.
10 - Turn Ignition switch to OFF.
On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.
"No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

The actual error codes will appear (format) as "P0374", for example.

What are the symptoms of a bad crank shaft sensor on a harley

If the sensor is bad, it'll throw a PO374 error code.

You DID check for any error codes, right?

Turn the Ignition switch to the OFF position.
Set the Run/Stop switch to the Run position.
Push in the odometer reset button and hold.
Turn on the ignition switch and release the odometer reset button. The process has been completed correctly when the speedometer needle sweeps across the speedometer and all indicator lamps illuminate. The speedometer will also display "DIAG."
Press the odometer reset button once. "PSSPt" will display on the speedometer. Each letter signifies an area of the diagnostics testing, with the current selection flashing. Push the odometer reset button to scroll through the components for testing.
Press and hold the odometer reset button for 5 seconds, then release. Any codes stored will be displayed on the speedometer. If no codes are stored, the speedometer will display "NONE."
Press the odometer reset button again to view additional codes, if any.
After any codes, the part's serial number (in what ever component you're in) will scroll across.
Record the codes and refer to your service manual (or post for others to look up) for possible faults or conditions.
Turn off the Ignition switch to exit the diagnostics testing.

Also if the code set is a historic code (not a constant light) after 50 start and run cycles of at least 30 seconds each in duration, the light will extinguish itself as long as the error hasn't occurred again.
If it were a current code, the light would remain lit while running.

Flashing odometer

Hi Anonymous, always check your instrument fuse before performing the next procedure, try cleaning your speed sensor located on top of the transmissions right side between the top cover and the chrome starter end cap on Twin Cams and on top of the engine case between the rear cylinder and the starter motor for Sportsters. Remove the the bolt that secures the sensor and pull it out of the transmission. Inspect sensor for obvious damage and repace if necessary. If sensor has no damage then wipe clean any obvious contamination like micro fiberous material with a clean rag and reinstall, torque bolt to 8 ft lbs.
