Question about Yamaha V Star Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

Yamaha 650 vstar 5 gear bogs down

1999 vstar 650 runs fine through first 4 gears but when I shift into 5 I have no power there I slow down and limp along at about 50 to 55 mph. It isn't the gear itself. I just cleaned the carb because one was clogged and it was running fine before that. I have taken it back off disassembled it and reassembled it twice now just making sure I didn't lose anything or screw something up but I can find nothing wrong.

SOURCE: Bogging and stalling at high RPM's

The main jet need cleaning.(you should clean them all though)

Main Jet: Main jet comes into play at three-quarters open to full throttle conditions. CRITICAL to high-speed engine operation. Not only does it meter the gas into the engine, it can aid in cooling the engine as well.

SOURCE: bogs down at 25 30 mph 1st gear 45 in 2nd gear

  • Check to see that the choke is not partially on.
  • Drain the carbs and clean them with B12 chemtool or any other good carb cleaner. The main jets in the carbs are probably gummed up. To clean the carbs properly they will need to be removed from the bike. Be sure to balance and synchronize the carbs when reinstalling.
  • Remove and clean the petcock water trap and clean the trap of water and rust etc. If a filter screen is present clean it as well.
  • Set idle speed to factory specs. Do not use gas with Ethanol.
This should fix the bog problem.

SOURCE: 1999 Yamaha Vstar 650 Custom ...makes clicking noise when trned

i use a jump box on mine most weekends when i wanna take it out, i hook the red to battery and black onto my exhaust and it fires right up no problem. is the clicking noise coming from the fuel pump behind the ignition? it should click for a few seconds then stop. if it stays on then you are not getting enough fuel outta the tank, change the fuel filter and if bike had been stored for winter get a good fuel system cleaner, additive type. if in USA get Berrymans B12, double dose get bike to run hopefully let it stand overnight and all should be fine. fingers crossed. if is is clicking from somewhere else like starter or a relay by the battery, check all the ground terminals you can find

SOURCE: Suzuki Savage 650 LS 4 gears found not 5.

Your bike has a fifth gear. The problem is probably a bent shift fork. Broken engagement dogs could be present but I have never seen that happen in anything other than 1st and second gear. This is approximately an $800 to $1000.00 repair. Personally, I really like only having to shift 4 gears. Don't you?

Below is a partial image of your trannie and also a generic image showing how a slider gear moves left and right when pushed by a shift fork. In this example the gear dogs engage into either 1st gear or 2nd gear depending on which way the fork moves the slider gear. If the fork were bent, the slider may go into second gear but not have enough movement to reach first gear. If the gear dogs were broken off then the gear has no way to engage.

I don't get paid for my answers but I do take pride in them, I just try to help where I can. So if you feel it is right, > > A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

My 1999 Yamha Vstar 650 Classic will not go into 5th gear, or does it only have 4?

Hi, Blackhawks70 it is a 5 speed and you should be able to shift into 5th gear with the engine off by rocking the bike back and forth for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. I need to know what kind of real end oil should i use on my 2007 yamaha vstar classic 650

For the final drive oil you can use any 80/90 Hypoid gear oil. If you choose a synthetic Hypoid gear oil your rear end will run cooler. One quart of oil is enough for 4 or 5 rear end oil changes. Because the rear ends are so expensive (around $1000), I change my rear end oil every other engine oil change.
