Adjust timing making tap or rattling sound i think it needs to be tightened how to do that?

Using a feeler gauge.You will have to look up the specs for your bike and use the proper blade on the gauge to adjust it.

Ok so ik I'm posting allot haha but does anyone know where or how to adjust lifters just found out mine r just now needed adjustment in near mount Vernon WA or a price at least haha


In engines with rocker arm valve systems, the procedure I'm familiar with is to remove a rocker arm cover, and (one at a time!) while the engine is running, slowly back off the rocker arm retainer nut or bolt just until you hear the lifter tapping, then tighten it a quarter turn. If you can identify a lifter that is already tapping, tighten its rocker arm slowly until it stops tapping, then adjust it. Do not over-tighten! This can damage the engine.

Listen carefully to how the engine sounds; if it starts to stumble when you tighten a loose rocker arm, you've gone too far. If you cannot get the engine to run well without tapping, you may have too much wear in the valve train and may be due for a head overhaul, or you don't have adequate oil pressure in the lifters in question.
Repeat until all rocker arms are done. Replace the rocker arm cover using a new gasket, then (in a V-engine), repeat the procedure on the other side of the engine.

Wearing safety goggles, or better yet, a transparent face shield, is strongly recommended. Sometimes oil will squirt out a considerable distance from the lifter side of the rocker arm during adjustment, and the direction is not readily predictable.

What do i do for tapping lifter


If your rocker arms are adjustable you can adjust that rocker arm by tighten it up a little at a time until tapping stops but,if the rocker arms are not adjustable or have a net lash then you will need to replace the lifter.

Rattling noise front engine area when I slow down with my 86 sportster, think it may be the belt (not an original HD) Runs great when accelerating, just when eg. slowing down and downshifting in a village...


When is the last time you checked the tension on your primary drive chain? Remove the round plug at the top of the primary cover. You can reach the primary chain through this hole. Use your finger to gauge the up and down movement of the chain. If you need to adjust the chain, on the bottom of the primary is an adjusting bolt with a lock nut. Loosen the lock nut and turn the adjuster upwards to tighten the chain, lower it to loosen the chain. The chain should have 3/8" to 1/2" of movement with the engine cold. Usually the final drive belt won't make a rattling noise since it's a rubber-like compound. It should have a tension of about 1/2" up and down movement with a force of ten pounds applied to it from the underside of the lower run.

THIS IS EASY TO DO, BUT REQUIRES YOU TO REMOVE THE VALVE COVERS AND WIGGLE THE TAPPETS BY HAND! TOO MUCH FREE PLAY CAN CAUSE THEM TO MAKE NOISE! YOU CAN ADJUST THEM UP A LITTLE, BUT DON'T OVER TIGHTEN THEM, OR YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR LIFTERS! CHECK YOUR LAST OIL CHANGE, AND IF NEEDED, YOU MIGHT CHANGE TO A HIGH MILEAGE SYNTHETIC OIL LIKE MOBILE ONE, IN A 10W-30! 10W-40 IS TOO THIN FOR THAT TYPE OF ENGINE!

How do I tighten the valves down? its making a


Ford valves are not adjustable, something is wrong. There are oversized pushrods that can be installed, but something is wrong to have valve noise, unless they backed off, somehow.

the thing is, you cannot tighten the chain, it needs to be replaced.. but what you want to do is make sure the cam chain tentioner is working properly mabye it is stuck open.. let me know how you make out

Is valve adjustment a part of normal maitenance on Suzuki Esteem


When you hear some tapping, that's why you need -valve adjustments. At 137,000miles you probably need more than that to continue your trouble-free drives.

Lifter valve trouble (maybe) on 1983 malibu


Hi there,Sounds like the valves are over tightened.You'll have to pull the valve covers off to adjust while its running to adjust them right.Another way you can test it is to give it a compression test to see if the valves are either staying open to long or closed to long.While its running and covers off you will get some oil spray so have some clothes ready.Now to eack valve you will have to loosen it until it starts rattling and then slowly tighten until rattle is gone and then another 1/4 turn..Do that to all of them then your valves all will be adjusted.Also double check firing order to insure correct timing..Hope this helps you and have a great day

Valve noise


I am from the old school. Start the engine with the valve covers off, back off the rocker nut until the rocker starts tapping then slowly tighten nut until tapping stops then go an 1/8 of a turn tighter. Repeat the same for the rest.I know it will be very messy and you have to watch the oil on the exhaust manifolds for a fire. There will be a lot of smoke. What I do is cut out sheet metal and use it as a shield so the oil does not flow over the head as much.
