I was looking to buy a used V max and wondered if this problem was related to a specific year or model. How expensive to have this repaired?
Mike
It was a design flaw, it was repaired in the late 90's. In the earlier Max's there was issues with the shift segment as well. But unlike the gears, you can replace it with an updated segment without pulling your engine and get it done in an afternoon.
No more problems than any other bike. By problems in 2nd gear, I sense that it doesn't want to shift properly neutral to 2nd, 2nd to neutral or 1st gear. This is a classic symptom of a bent shift fork.
Call a Yamaha dealer and ask what they would charge to install a shift fork. This is only a guess, $600 or so? ?
Find out and get back to me. I am curious what they will say.

It is a bad design. Both my brother and I have had different year vmax and they both had 2nd gear go out on them. I have also heard of others. When I checked about repairs about 4 years ago it was going to cost about $1200.
