How do i remove a 1982 kawasaki kz 1000 starter motor

Follow the specific instructions in the Factory Service Manual. Step 1 - Remove the heavy wire from the starter solenoid. Either end will suffice. Step 2 - Remove the chrome cover over the starter. Step 3 - remove the screws that hold the starter motor in place. Step 4 - Lift the starter motor out of the engine. NOTE: removing the carbs may make this step simpler. The "business" end of the starter should come out of the splined starter clutch gear. If you have trouble removing the starter from the clutch gear, you may need to remove the left side stator cover to gain access to the starter clutch and chain. Put in new starter it just spins doesnt engage motor

The starter engages with the starter clutch, normaly when the starter spins and doesnt engage, it is because the clutch bearings within the clutch have worn the machined surfaces causing the clutch to stick and not engage when the starter is pressed

My 2002 yamaha vstar 1100 classic started and ran fine. now the starter just spins. it wont turn the engine over to start it. i already changed the battery. what could be the problem?

The one way clutch inside the motor is slipping. On the back side flywheel is a one way clutch that grabs the starter gear when the starter motor spins. It is designed to let go of the gear once the motor fires up. If the mating surface of the one way clutch and the starter gear becomes rough or chattered, it will no longer grab and turn the motor over. To repair this you will have to take off the crankcase cover and pull off the fly wheel to replace the one way clutch and the starter gear.

Starter turns but the crake does not the starter clutch does not lock up or engage

hi, clasic case of starter clutch failure, rolers in the starter clutch alow the clutch to spin freely when running, with long term use, the clutch becomes worn not alowing the rolers to return fully hence not alowing the 1 way clutch to opperate, the best way forward is a new assembly, disasemble &remove clutch and check condition of all parts, in early stages it may be possible to replace only the worn parts. hope this helps paul

Some times when i try to start my bike. it will turn and not engage, i'll do it two or three times before it engages and starts

You may have a problem with the "over running" clutch in your starter. The way your starter works, the jackshaft must be fully extended and engaged with the ring gear on the outer clutch basket before the starter motor turns over. If the starter motor spins and the engine does not turn, it's the starter clutch (over running) clutch that is bad.

You can replace the clutch if you have the know how and tools and save some money. If you can't do the work yourself, you're better off replacing the entire starter. The labor time to disassemble, replace the clutch, and reassemble the starter will eat up any savings recognized from do it this way instead of simply replacing the starter. The labor time for the job will almost double but you can price it out to see which way is better.

Good Luck
Steve

Starter grinding

It could be any number of things but the most likely in my opinion is that you have a bad "over running clutch" or "starter clutch" in your bike. You didn't tell me what year model bike you have but the header of this post says you have a 2000 FLSTC Heritage.

The starter clutch can be replaced and you can save some money if you can do your own work. If not, the cost of repairing your starter and simply replacing the starter is about the same due to the added labor time required to take yours apart and replace the bad part. The starter clutch cost about $120 US. Once you get the starter off, there is about another hour labor to replace the clutch.

Good luck
Steve

How to remove starter clutch on a 1998 Dyna Low Rider

The starter clutch is an integral part of the starter assembly itself. You must remove the starter and disassemble it to get the "overrunning clutch" out. First take the starter off the bike. Then, remove the two long bolts and take the starter motor off of the drive housing. Then remove the bolts that hold the drive housing together. The overrunning clutch will come out of the drive housing. You will probably have to take the bearings off the original clutch and reinstall them on the new part. Reassemble the starter and reinstall it on the bike.

97 fatboy starter engages but will not stay engaged.

I would check the starter clutch its self first. It is a one way clutch so if you remove the starter and disassemble it to the starter clutch and hold the starter clutch in one hand and use your other hand to turn the starter clutch gear, it should only turn in one direction.
