Feel the top of the compressor is it hot? Usually when a compressor will start and stop this is called short cycling and it is caused by a defective start relay, overload and capacitor. Sometimes it it cause by a defective fan which when this happens all parts including a new fan must be replaced 241941004 Start Relay 218909913 Run Capacitor and a 242018301 Condenser Fan Motor
that reset is for the high pressure switch. this means your compressor is getting to hot which is then increasing the pressure and tripping the switch because the fan isn't running. usually if a capacitor is bad you can give the motor a "kick start " and the blade will then start turning. use a long stick or screwdriver to spin the blade but then you will know you need a cap. that switch is protecting your compressor, don't hold it down to keep it running.
Hi simpsonruth1..
In the back of the compressor motor you will see a fan, remove the plastic cover to get to it..
Once you have the plastic cover removed and the fan exposed, plug the compressor in and spin the fan with your fingers...be quick as the fan could cut your fingers if you do not get them out of the way..
If the compressor starts working, then the start capacitor is bad on the compressor...if it does not run then you have motor troubles, either replace the motor or get it rewound.

Hello, That condenser fan motor needs to be replaced. You and doing the right thing as far as using a seperate fan to keep compressor cool, buy replacing the fan the compressor will run cooler and click off by being too hot as you have heard/seen.
Find your model number and call your local appliance parts store and see if they have a CONDERSER FAN MOTOR in stock
The unit probable has a dual cap, if you look it will be on the cap somewhere, go to a motor repair shop and they should have it; there can be other starting components that could be bad, do not give up on the comp. until you have extinguished all other possibilities.
Hi, The motor probably is not starting because the bearings are a bit stiff.... Take the hood apart and give it a good cleaning, being careful to not get the motor wet... Then if you can get the hood in a position to run some light motor oil down the shaft and into the motor... spin the shaft as you do this... get oil worked into the motor bearings then it will probably work again...
your looking at $175-$225 for just the single phase motor depending where you purchase, I just replaced mine(identical unit) due to screaming dry bearings, if you replace it your self make sure to keep new wires tight along side of unit or fan will cut them if loose and its a fan- 5mfd/25mfd compressor@440volt cap
The cooling fan for the condenser is probably running, getting hot and seizing up. Check to see if the fan is free spinning after it stops. Take a probe and try to spin it manually. If it turns freely, then it could be going bad with it's electrical windings, the internal coils that create the magnetic field that spins the rotor of the fan motor. I suspect it is seizing up, however, once a fan seizes up, it usually stays that way and won't spin even after it cools down. It could be a capacitor that is going bad and not starting the fan after it gets hot. A capacitor is a small round shaped can type with usually 2 wires hooked in series with the motor it is trying to start. That is what it does, help start the device (compressor or fan motor). Good luck.Ken from Henderson NV.
