Primer bulb collapsed

I have a 22" push mower with a B&S 6.75 hp engine. There is a small red priming bulb that I press a couple of times to start the engine when cold. The mower runs great for 10 minutes then the bulb collapses and the engine dies. Two minutes later I can press the bulb again and the engine will start and run for another 5 minutes and then stall again. This began halfway through the summer, mower was running great, nonstop and one day this started. Any suggestions?

Slightly unscrew the gas cap and see it the problem goes away.
Many times the Gas tank Vent clogs and this will cause the engine to create a vacuum in the gas tank until the engine can't draw in the gas .

Check the muffler, if the muffler is clogged it could cause overheating of the engine, and could keep the engine from getting the necessary fuel-gas mixture.

Priming may not be the problem. First try putting some duct tape over the hole in the primer button. then try priming and subsequently starting it. This could indicate a need for a new air filter...I know it doesn't make sense, but it will probably be the answer to your problem. It was with mine although a different type of mower.

My briggs and stratton 158cc 500series push mower primer button melted from sun. how do i replace it?

There is a tab on either side of the carburetor right where the primer bulb sits. You can depress both of these tabs with a screwdriver and pry out the plastic ring that holds the primer bulb in place. You can purchase a new primer bulb (with a new plastic tab) from a local mower shop or from a small engine repair shop. When you install the new primer bulb, put the rubber bulb in first then put the plastic ring on top and press it in until the tabs click on each side. It should work correctly after the tabs are clicked properly. You can take off the air filter and look into the carburetor to see if the unit is priming correctly. I hope this helps you out.

I have just purchase a Sears 22 Lawm mower, with a Briggs and Stratton 158cc engine. I prime the motor it act like it wants to start but then dies. I pull it and try to strat it several more times and it...

The procedure for starting an engine is as follows:
  • Check that you have the throttle in the start position and/or on high revs with choke on
  • Prime the engine by pushing the button about 5 times
  • Pull out the cord until you meet resistance. Then let the cord go fully back into the engine and then pull the cord out sharply. Repeat this until the engine starts but not more than a few times.
  • If the engine doesn't start, try pressing the primer button another few times then try to pull start the engine
  • If the engine doesn't start after a few pulls it may have flooded so leave it for a few minutes before pulling the starter rope

The 'primer' doesn't work on my mower's Briggs & Stratton engine. Is there an easy fix?

You can try pumping primer bulb 10-15 times instead of 3 or 4 that manual probably suggests. We have a craftsman 22 inch cut push mower with a 3.5 H.P. BRIGGS &STRATTON engine and if you don't prime it at least a dozen times it will not start. It is possible that you have a small hole in your primer bulb in which case it can't create suction to bring gas to carburator. If this is the problem you can purchase a new bulb and seal at most larger SEARS stores or service centers.I would guess that if you have manual for mower you can get part number and phone number to get new parts .Hope this helps. Thanks

I Have a push lawm mower (mtd product model # 11a-439s729) serial# 1d261k81143 I have to prime before pulling the lanyard to start . I have no problem starting the engine ,the real problem is it will die...

I really need your engine number but I am going to guess that it is a 3.5 to 4 HP Briggs & Stratton with a black primer bulb on the side of the carb.

Try this the next start. Take a screw driver handle just a bit smaller than the primer bulb and FORCE it against the carb body trying to make a seal with the primer rubber against the carb body. You use your thumb if you can manage to depress the entire area of the center of the primer bulb agains the carb body. If it runs normally when you do this..... the Primer Bulb has a pin hole in it. (No joy..... read on)

If after doing the above you strill have the same problem remove the air cleaner and tighten all of the screws that mount the carb to the gas tank. Often over time the carb body will warp and then it starts getting air introduced into the diaphram that is between the cab and the gas tank. Tighten the screws. There are usually 5 of them. (Remember the body is plastic.... tight but don't break it) Then try another start.

If that does not work the diaphram between the carb and gas tank is probably damaged and will need replaced.

If you need parts info respond with your engine number or go to www.briggsandstratton.com and look it up for yourself using your ENGINE TYPE MODEL SERIES number found on the air shroud above the spark plug.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Mower shuts off 3 seconds after priming

Briggs made primers with and without holes in them. In my shop it is common to see them transposed on engines.
Take down the MODEL TYPE CODE numbers and check here to see if yours should have the primer with or without the hole in it.

Click the Parts Lookup box in the center of that page.
Next, drop down the menu on the left to Briggs & Stratton. Set the tab at the top to MODEL.
Next, type in the model number and click search.
From the results page, select your exact type number. Your individual parts views will then be listed on the right side of the page. You'll get the idea!

Hope this helps.
