A 2004 bear tracker and rebuilt carb. I used my lawnmower battery to crank the engine and while running, the CDI box began to smoke. with battery dissconnected, the CDI box continued to smoke. why?

Hi, Donald you may have fried your CDI box and it needs to be tested and or replaced for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your issue. I have a 1985 honda shadow vt500c, and like many others before me, im in need of a cdi box, or a fix to a broken cdi box, the used ones on line are a bit pricey for my wallet.

Unfortunately, the ONLY thing you can do is replace the cdi box....what REALLY sucks is that those cdi boxes were only used by Honda for 2 years...85 & 86...all the other years/bikes had MUCH cheaper units on them...And DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT waste your time on a USED part that is 30 years old!!! There is NO WAY to test a cdi box!!! Bite the bullet & buy a NEW one if you want to fix it & forget it.....there are new ones available online from a company in the UK for about $259.00 I speak from personal experience with this EXACT issue & once you replace the cdi box, that bike will run (providing everything else is good)

Best of luck!

How to tell if cdi box is working

usually a CDI box isn't testable. you have to eliminate everything else in the ignition system. or test with a know good CDI.

How to check a cdi box

use a multimeter to test the input and output of the cdi box. I've heard that the owners manuals for some brands may have a test procedure and values for your box. if you don't have the manual. try to google it, you should be able to find a pdf of it online. good luck

1983 Honda GL 1100 Gold Wing no spark

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting/leaking, spark plug cable connections loose check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil or electronic control module.
7. Faulty pulse coil.
8. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
9. Faulty ignition switch.
10. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
11. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

As soon as it warms up it dies (electrical?)

Yes , often times when electrical components are going bad , they start work until they hit a certain temperature then they quit. Most common items that quit with heat are pulsar pick-up coils , charge coils in the stator, CDI boxes, and ignition coils. Everything can be tested with a voltage meter accept the CDI box. The CDI box can test good and still be bad. You have to eliminate everything else first.

Bike ran just fine Friday night after riding all day. Washed my bike Saturday morning & now it won't fire. Already checked the plugs for spark-none. What is more likely to go out first: An Ignition...

It is a toss up. You can check the pulse generator with an Ohm meter. A nice dealer can give you the specification. You can test a CDI box with an Ohm meter , it can test good , and still be bad. The only good way to test a CDI is part swapping with another working bike. Most dealers will not let you return an electrical part and there is a restocking fee.

What causes cdi box to fail? the big red ran fine, but when trying to resart it the next day it will not fire. Also how do I know if it is truely the cdi box?

many things can cause a cdi box to fail they are hard to diagnose. but as far as testing goes u can use an multimeter to test ur resistence in the stator and coil if they test good its the cdi. or even a bad ground can cause it to loose fire.
