SOURCE: 2003 YZ 250 Oil Change

Use 10w40 in the gearbox. Get the oil from your Yamaha dealer along with any filter your bike may need. Some bikes use an oil change as the "filter". To drain oil, get the engine warmed up and turn it off. Put a pan under the gearbox and remove the oil drain plug. Replace the oil plug when the flow becomes a slow drip. Change oil in late spring, the middle of summer and in early fall. Remember to lube the chain and adjust it when needed. Lubricate the cables with liquid graphite. Lastly, install a stock spark plug. Now go for a ride.

SOURCE: putting wrong transmition oil in yz 125

Nothing significant, don't worry about it. You do NOT want oil marked EC, signifying energy conservation. Such oil will cause the clutch plates to slip and premature clutch wear. If the oil you put in does say EC on the small round type seal simply drain it out and put in the correct oil. Not critical but the sooner the better.

What kind of oil do I need to put in the crankcase?

No oil goes into the crank case as it is a 2 stroke. The oil is premixed in the fuel at a 30-1 ratio.
The gear box takes 10w-30 se oil.

I need to know the type of gear oil for my 2001 yamaha yz 250. and how much do i need to put in. and is there an oil filter on the bike not talking about the air filter thanks

The site below has a free download of a factory service manual. The bike has a filter and an oil screen. To tell you how to do the job would be a somewhat long letter. The manual will be a better way to go in this instance. Please rate my answer. Thanks! www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp

I don't know where to put the gear box oil

Most fill/check plugs are located on the top, or side of the transmission. The plug may be unscrewed with a ratchet or a wrench. I would go by the recommended amount of trans oil, but the side fitting can usually be filled up with a small hose until it spills out.

Oil

The oil capacity for your gear box is .69 us quarts or .65 liters.

The best type of oil to use is Yamalube 4(10w-30). You can use car oil in a pinch but isn't really recommended. The short reason why is: Car oil has friction modifiers in it where oil specifically made for a motorcyle doesn't. The frictions modifiers can and will make your clutch slip. The cover may also have a number such as 750 or 850 stamped in it. Then you can just go by what it says on the side of the oil container. I believe 850 is around 3/4 of a quart.

I really hope this helps you,
AadoubleA

And yes I have put synthetic(Royal Purple5w/30) oil in my 2001 Yz 125 without any ill results so it can be done, just probably won't be good for it over a long period of time.
Have FUN!
