1986 yamaha xj700 won't start just makes click

1986 yamaha xj700 won't start just makes click sound from starter solenoid relay... I replaced starter solenoid relay- same thing but one random day sounded like a short attempt to turn over. Bought new battery same problem still.. Also noticed headlight not on unless in high beam ( may be unrelated) but all other lights work. I can push or bump start the bike and it will run/ride fine- but still won't start with the starter button- just a click. Please help.

Sounds like a bad earth if you have jump leads go direct of earth to engine to see if this cures it if so you no where problem is clean replace earth

Hello,
Evansville! Nice part of the World.
Bud's Harley Shop still there?
O.k. daft thing is the off run switch on the handlebars turned to off?
Failing this will the bike start and run off bumping (Push start).
If it does take a look at the battery (Maybe Dead cell/s) or Starter solenoid wire/fuse.
Solenoid is located near the battery it is the cylindrical item with the main pos+ wire from battery going to it.
Good Luck! could do with a new Bud's Harley 'T' shirt as mines worn out.

Check fuses. Check voltage. Could be a burned, or just broken fuse. Could be a dead battery. Could be as simple as poor battery connections. If not, perhaps the following will help:

A starter can be tested in a very simple way, by applying 12vdc to the power input, and grounding the case. If it spins, then it's on to step 2, checking connections.

Starters are much too simple to be more complicated than that, but the electrical system can be. Check the circuit between the relay and the starter. Is is a direct wire with no breaks? If so, check the voltage at the power output and input of the relay. If it is good, check the power input and grounding of the starter.

Most new bikes have a clutch switch, and it may interrupt the 12vdc to the starter, without affecting the relay. Same thing goes for the nuetral switch.

Try starting in nuetral, with the clutch pulled. Check the relay for conections that you may have taken off, and not replaced. Same thing for the starter.

Take a piece of wire or a screw driver and short the terminals on the solenoid. If the starter works you have a bad solenoid. If you hold the starter button and tap the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works, you need new starter brush's.If you take the starter apart and do not have continuity between every other armature contact, just buy a new starter and put it in.

HI, LETS REMEMBER THE STARTER RELAY IS ONLY A MAGNETIC SWITCH, WHICH WHEN THE STARTER SWITCH IS PRESSED IT OPENS THE CIRCUIT AND ALOWS 12V DC TO COMPLETE THE CIRCUIT TO THE STARTER MOTOR, IF YOU BRIDGE THE 2 THICK WIRES AT THE STARTER RELAY WITH THE IGNITION SWITCHED ON, 1 COMES FROM THE BATERY, AND THE OTHER GOES TO THE STARTER MOTOR, AND YOU HAVE SUFICIANT POWER IN YOUR BATTERY THE ENGINE WILL TURN OVER AND START, THUS ELIMINATING THE RELAY, IF THE STARTER DOES NOT TURN OVER THE ENGINE WHEN YOU DO THIS IT IS LIKELY THE STARTER MOTOR ITSELF IS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY, YOU COULD ALWAYS REMOVE THE WIRE FROM THE RELAY AND PUT IT MOMENTARILY DIRECT TO THE POS SIDE OF THE BATTERY, INSTEAD OF BRIDGING AT THE RELAY, REMEMBER THAT IF THE BIKE RUNS WHEN YOU JUMP START IT, THEN THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE STARTING SIDE , AND NOT THE IGNITION SIDE AS THE IGNITOR IS CONECTED TO THE IGNITION SIDE REPLACING THIS WOULD BE A WASTE OF FUNDS. You should start by checking if its charging.
put a volt meter across the battery, it should read roughly 12v
then start the bike and it should rise to 14v
much more than this can blow bulbs and boil batteries

1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.

Doesn't completely start


Hi, Anonymous it should be noted that in order to "PROPERLY" diagnosis any electric starter issue it is "IMPERATIVE" that you begin with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a proper load test, and the usual suspects are:
1. Battery terminals have loose or corroded connections.
2. Battery cables faulty due corroded or broken internal wiring at the cable connector especially the "NEGATIVE" cable which needs to be checked at "BOTH" ends.
3. Battery voltage, 12.5 volts or better,to the main circuit breaker to the ignition switch to the security/ignition fuse to the TSM/TSSM module to the engine stop/run switch to the starter button to the starter relay to the green wire that connects to the starter solenoid has dropped more than 1/2 volt.
4. With a voltmeter connected to the battery, the ignition switch in the on position, the kill switch in the run position, the starter button depressed, starter engagement should not bring voltage below 8-9 volts.
If a lower voltage is produced a proper battery load test should be performed with a load tester to validate battery integrity or battery replacement.
5. Faulty starter relay, check continuity.
6. Faulty starter solenoid, check contact plate and shoes for excessive electrical erosion/etching, refurbish as necessary or invert contact plate and use the virgin backside. Check contact shoes for being loose. Replace solenoid if the negative function is still a final outcome.
7. Faulty starter, bench test starter with a 12-volt battery if negative function check, decontaminate and undercut armature commutator segments as necessary, check segments with an ohmmeter probe each one and the segment next to it for shorts. Have the armature tested with a growler and field coils, and brush plate with an ohm-meter for opens, shorts or grounds. Replace brushes if less than .438" It is generally cheaper to overhaul/refurbish a starter motor than buy a new one.

1986 ford f350 won't start


The solenoid click sounds very strong, implying that you have a charged battery and the ignition circuit is functioning out to the solenoid. Suspect an issue with the starter motor. Is the starter motor installed and connected properly?

V star 950 won't start


Hi, Joe you may have fried the ECM while trying to jump it from the Jeep otherwise the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Tip over sensor needs a reset.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
10. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
11. Check for engine trouble codes.

2005 Altima won't start, hear clicking sound coming from fuse box,key stuck in ingintion,won;t turn over,tried to jump start.


the clicking that you hear is coming from the starter relay. sounds like your ignition starter switch or ignition lock cylinder is bad.

If it won't crank over, it's a problem in the starting circuit, not the ignition circuit. Check your battery and starter for clean, tight connections. Listen for that click to see if it comes from the starter solenoid on the starter-maybe have someone try to start it while you watch and listen under the hood. If the click is from the solenoid (and not from the starter relay), then the starter is not getting full battery power to crank (bad connection), or the starter needs to come off and be tested.
If the click is from the starter relay, you could pull off the little purple wire to the starter solenoid and see if it has 12 volts when the key is in start position. If you have power there in cranking position on the switch, the solenoid is bad or the starter may be the problem-again, it will have to come off for testing. If you have no power at the solenoid in cranking position, the circuit from the ignition switch to the solenoid is not working. The start relay and the neutral safety switch (or clutch switch if manual transmission) are in the starting circuit from ignition switch to the starter solenoid. Good luck.

Replaced starter relay and stater in yamaha 1100 2001 v star


Charge battery to full, start in neutral, still clicks? Bad ground, or bad connection. Jump starter solenoid with screwdriver,etc. if motor turns over the relay is bad. Chaz Moto DC
