SOURCE: hi i have a 96

If the engine has points, there is a short circuit across them or if it has an igniter, the output stage has a short circuit on it. When you turn the ignition off, you get a spark.

New starter turns engine but will not fire

For the engine to run, it needs compression, fuel, and spark. having the proper tools for the ob is best but I will go with things readily available, without special tools.
Disconnect a spark plug and put a screw driver in the boot to touch the metal inside, place the shank of the screw driver close to metal, about 1/4 inch and crank the engine and look for a spark.
After cranking the engine, fuel should have got on the spark plug, remove the spark plug and check if it's damp or wet with fuel. Carburated engines are viewable if you operate the throttle and look down the carburator for squirting fuel.
With the spark plug off, stuff a rag on the threads where the spark plug threads into, don't fill the cylinder with the rag, just cover the hole by stuffing a rag on the threaded part, use a screw driver, then crank the engine, the rag should pop out of there during the compression cycle.
Apropiate tools needed is a spark tester, compression tester and fuel pressure tester and noid light. If you have these tools it is prefered you use them.

How to check a ignition coil pack to see if its good,

the coil does not crank the engine , the starter does that, sorry.
(if you ever had to hand or foot crank and engine , youd under stand that. (like motor cycles or boat engines, or per 30s cars.)

in fact will crank all day with no spark parts on car..

x2, the scan tool does tell you why there is NO STARTS, CRANKS OK. The pcm can detect, one missfire in 10 cmp;ckp signals.
  • CRANK FOR 5 SECONDS
  • release, key
  • scan tool has DTC errors?, read the believe them.
no engine stated of 4 or more,

U checked everything but spark,
why, check spark at all cylinders, all most fire or the engine will not run or stall.
That test be first, if not starting (AFTER SCAN TEST)

IF NO spark fuses are next , not last.
lets do no start fails tests. (cranks perfectly 200 to 300 rpm)
  1. : check fuses
  2. key on, CEL lamp must glow, if not , ECU fuse blown.
  3. crank with scan tool , see P03xx DTC errors, see RPM dead.?
  4. check for spark? got spark x4 or times number of cylinders?
  5. got spark try test fuel now, runs for 3 seconds?
  6. yes, runs on test fuel now means lost fueling
  7. no, dont run on test fuel, means, 1 to 5 done wrong above or engine compression bad.
  8. bad fueling, huge number of tests. check fuel pressure now.
confused, try a shop and watch them, learn.

After getting engine warm in my 98 dakota sometimes it quits and cranks and cranks but wont start

How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? Some dodge vehicles you can get mil codes, not sure about your year? It won't hurt to try, turn key just till dash lites come on, no further, cycle the key on--off, on--off, on. Then the mil on the dash starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. Your looking for two digit codes.

Also, when the problem is ongoing have a helper crank it, while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure, not only check for correct fuel pressure check that the pressure will hold for a bit, with everything off.
Sometimes with idle issues, I check the idle air system.

Why does tractor runs fine til it warms up then stalls and wont restart til cools down

Check to see if you still get spark at the spark plug wire when this happens, common problem is a "Hot Coil" the coil windings breakdown under high heat and causes a stall until it cools down, just pull a plug wire place it near engine ground with a small gap see if there is a bright blue spark when you crank the engine over. If no spark, or it is weak orange spark..let it cool down then try it again if it then sparks bright blue you have a coil issue and it needs replaced. I have also had key switches over heat and stall the engine as well check your wiring connections on the key switch if its burnt looking there is also a problem.

NEW BATTERY, NEW ALTERNATOR, ENGINE WILL CRANK BUT NO FIRE.

no engine option size stated, so i wing it..(generic is harder)
ok battery changed, no need for jumper cables now.
engine cranks robustly.
so no fire, i hate to tell you that word means (NOTHING)
there is fire to each spark plug (tip spark = fire) then there
is combustion fire , a goal on all cylinders.
so use the word spark , you then check spark at all cylinders.
please.
if spark is gone on 1 cylinder work that.
if spark is gone on all cylinder we then scan the ECU.
RULE 1, no EFI car , runs fueling unit (IT) thinks(sic) there is spark (3 way checks) this is Crash and fire protection on call cars.
most books fail to say this very important feature in all modern cars.
so that is why spark is 1st. never ever done last.
you crank engine for 5 seconds.
release key, not off. the key yet.
and the scan tool, shows P0340/355 or any codes relate to spark
CMP./CKP ,etc.
and the rpm shows 250RPM cranking, yes,the scan tool can see
RPM cranking and is a TOP check , missed by many noobs.

so now you have spark
on all cylinders.
we cross fingers #1 is good, 150PSI compression on all cylinders, min.
and blame fueling.
A: is it flooding or starving???? the spark tips (i bet its tunedup, huh)
are dry or wet.
B: more later if you get this far.

just oneline says it. for 100 years now. (otto cycle engines)
(cranks ok, compression good, spark good x4,x6, fueling last)

Engine cranks but will not start

why not check all cylinder for spark , no engine stated, so ive no idea at all if this is a COPS engine (coil over plug)
to run any Otto cycle engine, it takes spark at ALL cylinders not just 1.
if in the USA<(unstated) any $9 scan too you can crank engine.
for 5seconds, release key and it will tell you if spark is bad.
it can do that for the precursers to spark.
from coil primary all the way back to CMP and CkP sensors.

learn to bring a scan tool in to diagnosis and save a fortune in guessed parts. and wasted weekends.
you can buy , rent and barrow scan tools here, in USA>
there is never a reason to work blind here, ever. not for $9,or free.

engines not stated are
2.0 L I4 K20A4
2.2 L turbodiesel I4
2.4 L I4 K24A

which one? we can go to great details once told.
one trick to work cars, is to pretend the sheet metal and plastic
are missing on the car, that is what we are fixing.
and with that gone and tranny back, and suspension gone'
its and engine and EFI.

neither disclosed, nor even country.
other countries have different parts, and are not even OBD2 compliant until 2001 or even 2006
thats ok, only 2 posts in 10,000 even tell country.

Cranks won't start

First you must check to see if engine is mechanical sound by performing a compression test. remove the spark plugs install a compression gauge in the spark plug hole and crank engine about 4 cycles compare readings to all cylinders reading should be around 125-150 psi readings in the 50 psi range possible jumped or broken timing belt. If engine is mechanically sound test for spark at the spark plugs use a spark plug laid against valve cover and have some one crank it over look for the spark to jump the gap. A no spark problem is internal in the distributor.

Moms van

Hello, I'll need some more info, when u turn the key to start the van, the engine turns over (this is the same thing as cranks over, or cranks) but it won't start. Do I understand it correctly? If this is the case, u must check to see if u have spark at the spark plugs, if u do u must then check to see if gas is reaching the plugs. Those are the 2 main requirements of an engine running, spark and gas. The easiest way to check for spark, is to purchase one spark plug for your van, remove one spark plug wire by pushing in, while twisting, then pull out while twisting the wire ( hold the wire as close to the spark plug as possible so u won't damage the wire). Connect the new plug to the spark plug wire, place it on a metal surface, turn the key to crank the engine over (do NOT hold the plug while turning key on!!) , watch the tip of the plug for spark. Do this out of the sun, and it will be very obvious if u have spark at the plug or not. Let me know what u find.
