Sounds like a fuel problem. maybe try cleaning the carbs again and pay particular attention to the main jets also make sure you adjust and reset the floats in the bowls by getting the specs for the carbs and positioning the carbs at the appropriate angle and measuring the angle that the floats rest at and bending them to the proper position. one way or the other it sounds like it is being starved for fuel. check the fuel filter just for the heck of it.

SOURCE: My FZR 600 is acting up and backfires

I have had several bikes in my time. and keeping the carbs syncranized is very important. Did you put aftermarket pipes on it? try rejeting the carbs up 2+mm that may help the fuel air ratio?

SOURCE: 1979 suski 750,bike runs on 2 left side cylinders,

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

With the indulgence of craigjamesbt...

A few additional ideas to consider:

  • it would be an electrical/ignition issue if 1 & 4 or 2 & 3 will not fire but not 3 & 4;
  • almost always, raw fuel on exhaust indicates a flooded engine. A flooded engine would most likely be a carb issue;
  • best way to determine if it is an engine concern is to do a compression test;
  • a way to test the right carb pair is to deliberately starve them of fuel by temporarily plugging/blocking the inlet port/seat with rubber similar in appearance as to those used for glue gun, not installing the needle and float. Assemble the carb and install. Start the bike and use/spray carb cleaner on the right side carb. Note if 3 & 4 will fire even intermittently.
Would appreciate a postback on results/updates on any developments.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: 1981 Wide Glide Bike is missing and backfiring

open up the ignition cover plate and check the backing plate. it may have come loose and threw the bike out of time.
make sure your plug wires are plugged on tight and the coil wires are secure.
It is most definitely a timing problem.

Sounds like an engine misfire, most likely due to a spark plug connector insulator leaking to the cylinder head.

5. Dirty or damaged air cleaner element.
6. Plugged bowl vent or overflow.

10. Improper float level.

81 honda accord runs real rough and backfiring out of carb

That is a car not a motorbike. Bikes only have 2 wheels. But you may want to set up the cam and ignition timing. it is only timing that will cause backfires.

Ive got a 06 harley 1200 sportster when it warms up it starts to cough an sputter through the carb dosent do it all the time but on ocassion it runs fine just takes spells that it does it rebuilt the

Hi David, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module can be caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck

I have a 1992 Suzuki GSX-R 750, that wont start

It is in the carbs, A bike will act like that when it needs to be jetted, most jets are not adj, but whoever built the bike, must have messed with the carbs, you can go back to factory settings, which is about 1 1/4 turns out, and try it, you might need to get new jets, you might want to try dyno jet kit, they are adj and work great.. I had to do my bike, the exhaust was burning my eyes, backfired, wouldn't run, factory jets didn't work. But I found a dyno jet kit on ebay, and it works great. But before you take the carbs off, take a piece of heavy paper and cut the air intake in half with the paper to see what it does, then cut by 1/3, then 1/4, just to see if the intake is messing with you. Check it out, hope it helps.

Leaking gas frm bottom and does not run right

the float may b sticking...depending on what type of carb ur running...the spit and sputter problem sounds like you are running a keean carb and if thats the case...there is a extra setting on those that is leaded in from the factory that your average joe doesnt know about...have someone familiar with this adjust it for you and that will help some ...however if itis a keean either live with it or change carbs...that spit you described is just how they operate

Bike backfires,dies,restarts runs fine

your carbs are dirty. and probably need to be balanced also... bring the bike bto a garage and have them cleaned by a profesional.... also after market pipes don't give your bike the proper back pressure .. that can mess up your carbs timing

I have a 1997 1200s it iS sputtering in the intake like backfireing, the spark plugs are clean no iol foul or wetness present. any suggestions please..

Had your bike sat a long time without being started? Been down real bumpy roads? I worked on a friends 1999 883 Sporty recently, it needed the carb rebuilt. I cleaned out all jets and passages, and float level was reset, it was out of adj.. Also, when diagnosing bike hard starting and backfiring out the air cleaner problem, I found the timing plate had losened up and the timing was off about 7 degrees which I adjusted back to spec before I rebuilt the carb. The plugs were also clean, not dry..Runs Good Now. The shop 1st looked at bike before I did, they said it was an Ignition problem and changed out the key switch which did Not solve problem.
