Rectifier regulator /or alternator ...start engine ..put meter on wire coming from alternator if over 14.0 volts its shot should be 13.5 to 13.9 if thats ok rectifier regulator is shot

the battery is not any good or the alternator/charging circuit has a flaw--- this is not safe remove that battery like asap. test voltage coming from the bike to battery while in operation to see if it is actually overcharging- a multimeter will serve you well in dealing with this, more questions just ask
Be VERY carefull when charging the battery on this bike!! DO NOT overcharge!! The 2005 models have a "bus wire" that runs the speedo,security,and ECM. If you overcharge it,you could fry all 3 !! If the battery isnt taking a charge,...replace it! Its not worth the $1500.00 it will take to fix the other things over a $80.00 battery.
Voltage regulator failure, possibly overcharged the battery. Did any lights burn out? Is the battery water low or gone in any cells? Voltage regulator failure usually means no charging but it can overcharge to. Take battery to the shop for load test etc.
Check your regulator/rectifier output is it according to standard.
Is your battery in prime condition as a minimal caopacity battery retention will make the alternator/charger produce a higher output level to quickly charge the battery to optimal state.

overcharging means bad regulator...does you battery go below 12v...if it does you probably have a bad cell....a bike wont start unless it has the proper amount of amps and to low a battery just wont do it.
Almost always, overcharging would indicate a faulty voltage regulator or more specifically, shorted. A shorted condition would not adjust to the need/status of the battery but supply to the battery an always maximum charging current, hence the overcharging.
On most versions, the voltage regulator would be behind the cover below the battery.
