The speedometer (dashboard gages) on our 2005 4-door Cavalier has stopped working... is this an electrical/cluster problem, or can this be solved with a tune-up?

Is it the whole cluster not working at all or is it just the speedometer not working? If its just the speedometer it could be simply the vehical speed sensor if its the whole cluster there most like is a problem within the cluster causing it not to work, firstly i would check all the fuses for the instrument panel and make sure there all good, check the plug behind going into the cluster and make sure its secure, if all of that checks out then you might be looking at a replacement on the whole cluster assembly, which is not a cheap item....

Why does the speedometer quit working

Something is failing in it, it is 15 years old and that happens. Most likely it is electronic and there is a sending unit screwed into the side of the transmission. These are usually cheap and easy to get at on a pickup truck. So you can buy a new one at a parts store, unplug the old one unscrew it, screw in the new one and reconnect the wires. If that did not fix it you are looking at replacing the instrument cluster and that is way more work and way more money. If it is a mechanical speedometer then you are looking at replacing the cable which unscrews from the transmission and the back of the cluster. Again on pick up trucks this is usually not too hard, but if a new cable does not fix it then you are looking at another cluster.

Could a blown fuse cause the speedometer to stop working?

A bad shorted out component in the cluster could blow the fuse which supplies power to the cluster and that would knock out everything in the cluster. A fuse protects the components on the circuit and when it blows out replacement fuses are just going to blow out again and again until you find and fix the component which is causing the fuse to blow. If everything else in the cluster is working, then I would be looking at changing the speedometer itself or the sending unit on the transmission which provides it information about speed.

I've had a similar problem with my '94 prizm. I had to replace the instrument cluster about seven or eight years ago because the speedometer quit working. After replacing with a used instrument cluster it's been working fine till now. However, the problem is back I'm looking for another used one. There is definately a weakness in this speedometer design when the mileage on the car gets high. Your problem is different since you replaced both the sensor and the speedometer and it still doesn't work. Chances are, you got a speedometer that didn't work to begin with. I would try another used one.

The speedometer is stuck

You have to change a speedometer.
Call junk yards tell them that you are looking for a speedometer cluster for your car and and also the miles on your car

The speedometer jumps around and will sometimes pass 100mph then stick. It may stay there for days then hop back and work for awhile.

Assuming everything else is working either you need a new speed sensor or a replacement for your speedometer cluster. From your description I would guess the cluster. Look around on ebay and craiglist for a used replacement. Usually a cluster will fit many different years, you will be looking for newer and/or lower mileage.Do not buy a new one for that year vehicle.

The speedommeter and odometer is not working on my Honda VT125C4 motorbike. Odometer reads 642 miles.

There should be a speedometer drive cable that runs from the instrument cluster to the front wheel of the bike.

- Make sure the cable is connected both at the instrument cluster, and at the speedometer drive gear on the front axle, between the wheel and the fork.

- Ensure the drive cable is not broken - this may not be apparent by simply looking at the outside of the sheath. You may need to remove the cable and ensure that there are no breaks inside the sheath.

- Ensure that the speedometer drive gear is not worn or broken. This will require removing the front tire and disassembling the speedometer drive gear box.

- If all the above items check out, the problem is likely in the instrument cluster, and will require repairing or replacing the instrument cluster.

94 accord, the speedometer doesn't work.........

I had a similar problem a few months ago. I changed the speedometer sensor as well as the instrument cluster with no result. Finally I decided to take out my ECU. As soon as I took it apart, I noticed a burnt node. Replaced the ECU and the speedo worked fine. You might try this if tinkering with your cluster doesn't work.

Instument Guages

well the issue is youe enitre gauge cluster i do understand that your speedometer is working but it is a cable speedometer not electronic like everything else in the gauge cluster so first i would recomend checking the voltage getting to your gauge cluster then just replace the guagecluster they are really cheap i a salvage and not hard to install at all but the cluster itself is not very comon to go out so make sure you check voltage to it first i wouldnt want you to go through buying and replaceing the cluster and that not fix it
