google "burgman dealers" and you can find a dealer and even corporate HQ. Also google "mororcycle salvage burgman" Site numbers 7 & 8 look promising. Also, "mororcycle salvage burgman 650". Between the dealers and the salvage yard you should be able to find another engine.
I had the same problem until I found out that when you put the Burgman on it's center stand, it pushes a small round metal pin (spring loaded or something similar) that limits the Burgman to 1st gear only. Some kind of safety feature, I guess. You can see the little switch if you put the bike on it's side-stand, get down on the right hand of the bike and look where the centre stand meets with the body of the bike. My switch was stuck in permanent "on" so I just pulled the pin to it's full extention with a pair of pliars, then cut it with a junior hacksaw.
Hi - sorry to hear that the endine is not fit. As far as a replacement is concerned, you don't say which country you are in. Here in UK there are a number of dealers that deal in crashed/repairable bikes - they can be found in the ads at back of motorcycle magazines. Also, we have magazine called Exchange & Mart that is OK for speares (but Nurgman is fairly rare bike). Other place is eBay.
As for other sizes, my understanding is that the frames of the 250 (possible replacement) and 400 are not same. 650 definitely will not fit.
