Re: Can i use rotella oil in a conventional gas motor
You should use a good motorcycle oil. A motorcycle oil has additives that benefit the clutch. I recommend Amsoil 10W40 motorcycle oil for the goldwing for most conditions and I am not a dealer.

You can use any oil that is JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. 10w-40 for cold climate. 20w-50 for warm climate/touring. The standard weight that was sold for your Virago when it was new was 20w-40. Car oils use different additives and may cause scoring in certain types of cam bearings. Do not use any oil that says " Energy Conserving " on the label . It will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. If you choose Synthetic oils, they will help your bike run cooler and shift easier. Shell Rotella T ($12 a gallon) and Rotella T Synthetic 15w-40 ($22 a gallon) are inexpensive JASO MA oils. You will need 4 quarts of oil, an aluminum drain plug washer, and a filter. Pour in 3 quarts , run the motor, and check the oil level . Top up as needed.
Synthetic are better oils for your car life.Conventional oils are stanard for most cars but create wear and tear to your motor.Synthetic oils have less larger oil molecules. That cause less friction to your engine making it live longer and less maintance for you.Conventional oils have mixed molecules that create friction to your motor.Conventional molecules look like o0oo0o00oo.While synthetics molecules look like ooooooo.Synthetics oils can increase your fuel economy giving you extra money.Synthetics are cheaper for the consumer because you change your oil less than conventional oils.If you are changing from conventional oil to synthetics change your oil filter to synthetic also.

Use only a JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. Automotive oil uses different additives and will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. Shell Rotella T Synthetic (15w-40 about $22) and Shell Rotella standard oil ($12 a gallon) for diesel engines , both are JASO MA rated for motorcycles.10w-40 oil is good for cold climate. 20w-50 for hot climate/touring. Synthetic oil will make your cycle run cooler and shift easier. For the engine you will probably need four quarts of oil, a filter, and a drain plug washer . Pour in three quarts and check the oil level by placing your motorcycle on the center standard looking at looking at the dip stick. Run the motor and top up as needed. If changing the oil filter you will have to run the motor to get an accurate oil level reading.
The motor oil lubricates both the engine and the transmission.

you can use either and mix them ,best advice here is to change the oil every 6000 miles with a oil filter every third oil change ,use the cheapest diesel/petrol oil you can buy even a monograde like sae 30 and you will not go far wrong ,Too much hype put out by oil companies as lot of mark up on oil ,and even more so in dealers trust me --- seen it ---- top dollar for oil and shell rotella put in everything which bought in bulk was cheap ,good oil though .another place used SAE30 and charged the price of duckhams but i am going back a bit their though
You will need to use a 10W-30 grade engine oil, such as any of the following Mobil products. "Fully synthetic" oils are more expensive. Conventional oils or syn blend engine oils are fine for the vehicle but need to be changed more frequently.
Have run it in my GL1100 and my GL1200 for years.
