Second leg of long drive (2.5 hours each way): CEL is usually on (emissions problem, common) but it started blinking, was running rough, shuddering, seemed fine at higher speeds on highway. Put some mid-grade fuel in an topped up the oil as it has been burning oil It seemed better. But then when I slowed down at exits, it started blowing LOTS of white smoke out exhaust and smelling bad. Cat converter was replaced last fall; car has total of 205K miles (195K when I bought it). Not sure if head gaskets were ever replaced. Any ideas? I am scared to drive it and also scared the repairs will cost a mint...

Assuming that the Smoke is White or Black, You are gonna have to get an Overhaul on that Motor.

Your mechanic is ok with saying that...however you should replace both head gaskets. This can get costly if you take it to have it done somewhere, but if you use a manual from your local library or buy one from your local auto parts store, its a much more cost effective way of fixing it. You are ok to drive it, be sure to check your fluid before you do. I would look into getting these changed within the next few weeks.
Thanks for using Fixya!

SOURCE: After high speed driving, slow speed shudder
when it starts to shutter get the car up on a lift and spin the wheels and look and see if there is a wheel bubble.
if the brakes were done recently a binding brake pad can cause some of that.
hope this helps
