When the Engine Light comes on any vehicle it will eat gas, because it is in "limp mode", Try doing a tune up (spark plugs, plug wires, new air filter, gas filter, etc.

THERE is so many things that can cause light to come on. have you checked the gas cap to make sure it is tight? have someone scan it and pull the code and i can help you from there
You describe a symptom that most often is related to malfunctioning / failing Throttle Position Sensor. Check engine codes and reference them to a OBD II code reader, you can use a inexpensive code reader from a Discount Auto Parts store... If code references TPS sensor replace and reset codes... hope this helps...
hi yes this is limp mode to protect the enigine from any other damige when the light comes on its best to get the car hooked up to find out the cause thats makeing the light come on
