1995 Cougar Odometer/trip-meter inop

I routinely reset the trip-meter when I fill up with gas, so I can compute and record miles-per-gallon. The last time I did this, both gauges stopped working. They're the traditional rolling tumbler type that have been around over 50 years, not digital displays. I suspect that something small broke or lodged when I pushed the reset, but wiggling the button, and pusing it a few more times have not gotten it to work. Have you had any experience with this? Is it difficult to get the cluster out of the car to try to troubleshoot? The car has less than 90,000 miles, so I don't think it's warn out.

Thanks

Mike

I gave you the shop manual inforamtion to remove the cluster and the odometer from the cluster so you could see what is wrong. I don't know what else I could do except maybe come and fix it for you. "Thanks for trying" is a pretty low rating for this much work on my part. Good luck with your repair.

If your 95 XR7 odometer stopped working the most common problem is the plastic gears. They get so hot the surface shows bubbles that weaken the gears and eventually cause the gear or gears to break and the odometer stops working. The odometer part of the speedodometer has a small electric motor which drives a 16 tooth cam gear also called carrier gear (POD) which then drives a 20 tooth internediate gear which drives the odometer and trip odometer. These 2 gears need to be replaced. I also have a 95 XR7 and had the same problem and I got the replacement gears and did it myself. If you go to www.odometergears.com they have picture instructions and you can also order your replacement gears.

What is the normal fuel comsumption for a nissan navara

when you say it seems to be using too much, that is just a feeling
what you have to do is fill it right up and press the trip meter on the speedo
then you drive/use the vehicle normally until you are around 1/4 tank on the gauge
fill it right up again and record the reading on the trip meter
reset the trip meter and use normally again
repeat the process say for 4 tank fills recording each trip distance
then you will see what the fuel consumption is for example 40 liters for 400 klms is 10 liters per 100 klms or 20 galls for 200 miles is 10 gallons per 100 miles
the requirement to record distance and fuel put in will give you an accurate consumption over traffic, driving and atmospheric conditions from there you can ask --is this consumption figure around right for the car?

How do I reset the distance to empty

The DTE is automatic and is the result of your previous miles per gallon multiplied by the gallons of gas registered in your tank.

Unlike the Trip miles, this DTE number can not be reset. It will vary by the fuel mileage per gallon recorded at each startup. That is why if you filled the tank and showed 400DTE you may have had 20 Gallons multiplied by 20 MPG. But if your new average is 16 MPG then it would show 320 DTE.

After getting gasoline, it increases wrong mileage with camry 2003

One tank of gas is not enough to compare mileage. Or are you saying the computer's readout of mpg estimate is showing less? Try a tank or two of premium and see if that helps. Keep track of gas mileage. Driving techniques have a lot to do with gas mileage, as does long trips vs. short trips, highway cruising vs. city driving. For best mileage, do regular maintenance and keep the car in top running condition-good spark plugs and clean filters and clean oil ! Attend to minor problems before they escalate.
If you want to check actual miles per gallon, start with a full tank. Write the odometer reading down, and go. Everytime you put gas in, write down the amount. When you are close to 1,000 miles from the time you started, go fill the tank and include that amount of gas to your previous list. Now add up all the gas used and divide it into the miles to get miles per gallon. (976 miles/31.8 gallons = 30.69 mpg ) . Only one tank will skew your numbers, might be off cause the tank was filled more to the top than the previous fill-up. About a thousand miles of driving will give you a very accurate figure of miles per gallon for your car.

Fuel gauge is showing amout of fuel like backwards on gauge. vehicle has 1/2 tank of fuel but gauge is showing like in the 100mph speed gauge

I think that the fuel sending unit in the tank is broken or the wire from the unit is unhooked.to keep from running out of fuel. fill up the car and use the trip oddometer to calculate how many miles you can travel. that car has 12 to 15 gallon tank and should get 20 to 25 miles per galloni would think that start putting gas in about 250 to 300 miles. then reset trip odometer

I HAVE A 2003 GMC ENVOY. I NEED TO KNOW HOW MANY MILES CAN I DRIVE BEFORE THE GAS RUNS OUT ON A FULL TANK?

there is a book publish by the govnt or minister of transport on the exact milage as well if you know how many liters or gallons go in your tank like 80 liters and the gas is 1.00 a liter it cost $80 for 80 liters on a full tank you do 500 km but make sure proper conditions of 100km a hour tires all proper equal pressure the wind is also a facture there is a lot involved to calculate your gas proformance as well if you had a oil change done latly you can find out on a govt site for gas consuption or consumers report

I bought a used 2003 A4 Convertible Audi 3.0 Feels it burns more gas than expected. Is there anything I can check or do to reduce that. Thanks Sean

to see what you get for mileage, take it to a gas station and fill it till the pump stops and reset your trip meter. Drive it around like you normally would to work or whatever till the tank is almost empty and go fill it up again till the pump stops. Its best to go to the same pump you used before. Once it is full look to see how many gallons or liters you put in(This is how many you used since the last time you filled up). Take the number of miles/kilometers from your trip meter(the number of miles/kilometers you drove since you last filled up) and divide it by the gallons/liters you used and you will get your miles/kilometers per gallon/liter. Compare this with the rating your vehicle is suppose to get. But remember it can very depending on how you drive.
Miles/kilometers divided by gallons/liters

If I've travelled 2082 KL in a 12 month period how much fuel would I have used in an SUV

Depends on how you drive, how long you let it warm up, etc. If it was getting say 20 mpg, it would use about 65 gallons to go 1294 miles (2082KM), Do you know how to check your fuel mileage? When you fill up, zero the trip meter, or write down the miles, next time you fill up, get a receipt with gallons (liters) on it and write down the miles, divide it by the number of gallons, this is miles per gallon. 200 miles divided by 10 gallons equals 20MPG . zero the trip odometer again and next tank you can figure it again. I write the miles on my reciepts so anytime I want I can check. Hope this helps.

1995 Saab 900 Won't Take A Fill Up

Sorry if this gets posted twice. I have a 95 Saab 900, which I just acquired. I can get only about 4 or 5 gallons in at a time. The best analysis I found was this one where the man pinpoints a stuck valve in the gas tank, and tells of what he did to address it.: http://www.quasimotors.com/9_5_gas_fill_prob.htm
