Bike won't start after riding for about 10 miles. Once it cools down again it starts has a dragging sound to it.

When we try and start our bike after it has beeen running awhile it won't start. We have replaced the starter and have a good charge battery. We can't figure out why it doesn't want to start when we stop anywhere then once cool it tends to start but drags to do so.

Check the ignition coils. they are prone to heat as they age, when they heat up they can go "Open circuit" and then close up when they cool down.

SOURCE: bike shut off when riding.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your description indicates an electrical malfunction. Offhand, the jump start and charging is significant. This points to the bike's battery not charging. Suspects would be:

  • voltage regulator (most likely);
  • connectors to voltage regulator (likely). Check/clean corrosion/burnt marks;
  • stator and/or the 3 wires coming from it (least likely).
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: '01 GSXR 1000 won't start at temps above 170 or so.

Check the coolant sensor.Probably reads to the ECU that the engine is cold while it is not and the ECU injects more fuel that it should.Unscrew the coolant sensor (it is located on the cylinder head or on the thermostat casing) and boil it in water and measure it's resistance before (cold) and after boiling it (hot). It should not be the same.

You were lied to.
May be a fuel filter. Bike runs for a while then stops.
coils do this too. Only way to check is to replace it (or them)

SOURCE: 03 Suzuki GSXR 750 keeps shutting off while I am riding?? HELP!

Seems you are running entirely off your battery.
Indications are a suspect lighting or source coil is shorting. Resistance test will show discrepancies. Data is available on-line, search technical/electrical manuals from Clymer or Haynes. An auto shop sells cheap multi-meters than you can use. It is a stationary test and will identify individual component problems. As rectifier/regulator, cdi box and wiring/switches/connections all have an effect. These test are outlined within these publications. Cheers (and don't get caught)

yes sounds like carbs need to be stripped and cleaned once that's done and bike ok you better off putting an inline fuel filter on bike stop any debris going in carb again , filters are good for about 1000 miles so worth putting one in

Why won't 1981 suzuki gs 550 bike won't start after riding it and it's warmed up?

hi
glad i served a long time with wisco and used drag raced for them at one time
sounds to me that your ignition is to far retarded
which means the ignition will spark closer to (TDC)
top dead center
some people advanced the ignition 3 deg to stop the engine from smoking when they did away with 4 star fuel
and gave us unleaded fuel
doing this the performance is great and fast acceleration
but it also make the engine run hotter than normal
unless you have up jetted the carbs
and fitted a non standard exhaust system
the whole idea is get the fuel/air mixture in and out as fast as possible

if you still have points
take your points cover off and adjust your points baseplate
undo the three screws that hold it in place
and just move it about 3 deg towards the rear of the engine
or may be you have a electronic ignition fitted
if so do the same thing
and advance the ignition 3 deg

hope this works for you

Oil pressure indicator/engine won't start

I would drain the oil and refresh inc filter, take all plugs out and spin it over with new oil fitted and filter, if it feels sounds tight, squirt some WD40 in the pots, spin again if looser maybe a strip down eh.

More likely to be your ignition coils. They heat up and expand this can cause an open circuit which will close up again when it has cooled down. Although, a bad charging system may cause this problem. Check the battery voltage with engine switched off ( approx 12 volts) and with the engine running (approx 14 volts) If you are getting 14 volts then your battery is dead, if you aren't, then your charging system has a fault.

I have a 883 harley davidson sporster, was riding the bike and road over a bump and bike shut down and won't start

I'd check the battery first. I've seen the post break loose from the batteries in many Sportsters and leave them dead on the road. I've only seen this happen once on a Big Twin. Why? I have no idea. If nothing on the bike works, this may be the problem. If everything else works but it just won't start, I need more information. Does the starter engage and the engine turn over?

This sounds like you may have a vacuum leak, look for something rubber that is being affected by the heat. You can spray brake cleaner (carb cleaner eats paint) and listen for RPM change. Push and pull on any hoses and rubber parts, again listening for RPM change.
