The intermediate cog will spin freely one way but not the other, works on a principle similar to a centrafugal clutch.

SOURCE: how to remove the starter clutch on a 2003 yamaha

It is on the back side of the flywheel for the magneto/generator. You will need to remove the left engine side cover then pull the flywheel. It does take a special puller to get the fly wheel off. Once you get the flywheel off, there are 8 allen bolts that hold it to the back side of the flywheel.

I have a 2001 yamaha v star 1100 classic and the starter isnt engaging with flywheel. I put new starter in but still just spinning, not engaging. what should I do next?

Hi, Timothy your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Electric start does nothing and kick start ain't working ur has power Yamaha Cygnus x 125

the way you are describing it the engine is seized
but if the engine will turn over on the flywheel bolt
then it could be a couple of things
using your kick start (if your kick start does not move when pressure is applied then your engine is seized)
(remedy) total engine strip
("your kick start just goes up and down not doing anything")
seized clutch
remedy strip your clutch and clean up
("if a clicking noise is heard when using the electric start but your engine does not move it is your starter solenoid")
take off old one and replace and replace

Yamaha MOTO YFM200 Start Problem

hello
just behind that left cover is the flywheel and the starter gear workings. just behind the flywheel is the starter gear that has a one way clutch built onto it. that gear has a smooth shoulder that rides into a mehcanism that is bolted to the back of the flywheel. when working right this allows the gear to grab the flywheel via one-way clutch. and allows to freewheel when the motor is turning. so if you dont feel any resistance on that idler gear. then you will need to replace the larger starter gear behind the flywheel, and the one-way clutch workings that are bolted to the flywheel. the only difficult thing about this procedure is pulling the flywheel. this will require a special puller. but any yamaha shop can get this pulled off for you for cheap. hope this helps. thank you.
