Car stalled out and died. Cranks, but wont start all of the sudden.

2004 Xterra Manual Trans. Car stalled out at an intersection then wouldnt start back up. Cranks good, but wont fire. Had it towed home. I sprayed starting fluid in the air intake, but it still wont fire. Wasn't noticing any issues leading up to this, just seemed all of the sudden. Not sure if I killed the vehicle myself (stopped on an incline, manual trans.) or if it just died on its own. Either way, wont start back up. Distributor cap issue? Not a mechanic, just poor and desperate. Cant afford to have it towed to a shop and diagnosed. It's my only vehicle and now I'm stranded and can't get to work.

On an incline that you stopped on, dont under estimate that if your low on fuel it may not be picked up by the fuel pump, or your fuel pump may have went out. If you run low on fuel often or up & down hill on low fuel will cause your fuel pump to burn out premature, they even say not to run less than a qrtr tank to be safe, but todays cost in fuel usually people wait till the last minute (gallon) which puts a strain on the fuel pump as the gas cools the motor and incline and decline in roads will mimic a low tank. What doesnt make sence is you sprayed starting fluid which should have fired for a few seconds, which brings you to spark issues, check you coil pack plugs and wires, most likely coil pack over plug and wires should still fire even if a plug or wire goes bad, but the coil pack controls the power going to the wire then plugs.

Testimonial: "slight incline with at least 2/3 tank. its at home in the garage now (level) and still has the same issue. I think I can rule out fuel pump. I've never dug this deep (and I know this is hardly deep) into a car before. Can you explain how to best test the coil pack controls?"

I had the same problem recently, but gave me 2 codes knock sensor (which will not activate the service light as i found around)
and gave me the air flow mass sensor. took it out clean it,

SOURCE: 1995 Nissan Altima Stalls while driving

Our's did the same thing. We tried changing the fuel filter...nothing. Then, my father-in-law did some checking around and different mechanics told him the same thing....the DISTRIBUTOR. Apparently this is a fairly common problem with our '95 Altima's. We changed the very worn spark plugs then went to the NAPA store and ordered the distributor....$242.00 for the whole part. We got it the next morning, my father-in-law changed it and now the car is working like a charm!!!! It is an EASY fix...all you need is a screw driver!! GOOD LUCK!!

SOURCE: Nissan Sentra random stalls and wont start hot

Check out the catalytic converter, might be plugged up. I have seen some cars that will run fine, and like someone threw a switch the car acted like yours, no power, would not rev and died. Later when cold they would be OK for a while then just get worse and worse.

IAC valve has gone bad. Its located on the throttle body and is what controlls/keeps the vehicle running at idle.

Yes, if the camshaft position sensor has failed, your vehicle won't start.

Car stalled and died. Cranks but wont start all of the sudden.

You will need to see if you are getting spark to the spark plug. You can remove plug cable a d insert a screw driver and place metal of screw driver within 1/8 of an inch from metal on engine or car. Have someone try to start the engine while watching the gap for spark. Make sure you have good connection in cable. If no spark, then it may be distributed.

When engine is warmed up the car begins hesitating

I really think it's the TPS, (throttle positioning sensor) on the throttle body. When this sensor is defective or out of position the vehicle will idle like that and even stall. If you haven't had it scanned, you should do so, that will probably tell you the problem.
