Transmission noise - 93 Honda del Sol w/ 5-spd manual trans.

I have a 93 Honda del Sol w/ 5-spd manual trans. It makes a loud gear-meshing noise, something between a whine and an "rrrrrrr" from the from passenger side. The sound occurs when the car is in any gear, and varies with the engine speed (not wheel speed). Sound does not happen while the clutch pedal is depressed. And it often does not occur in 1st gear until maybe 2000 rpm, but then starts suddenly. It seems to happen even when in neutral when clutch pedal is released, but much quieter. Found one previous post that was similar, but not sure it's identical - that indicated a clutch problem.

Any hints?

Makes high pitched sound when starting. doesn't want to go into gear

Have you checked the transmission fluid? I believe the problem is within the transmission, because it wont go into gear. A whining noise, or high pitch noise, can be caused by low transmission fluid, which allows air to get in the transmission lines, or it could be a bad transmission pump. This is for a automatic transmission, since it is what I believe that you have in your car.

How do I check automatic trans fluid in a 1997 Honda Civic? In the past I've always check fluid with the car idleing in park at normal operating temperature. But the Honda dealer is telling me to check it...

That's because you don't understand how a Honda trans works. Think of it as an automatic manual trans, that is Honda's trans are the only one's where all the gears are constantly meshed. When a Honda trans shifts, it engages that specific gear. All the gears are meshed, a Honda trans engages a clutch pack which gives power through that specific meshed gear, just as you would if you were shifting a manual trans. Now since all the gears are constanly meshed, they are inmersed in trans fluid, If you check it while it is running, It will show less, plus the fact on some Honda models the gears are right next to the dip stick and if your not careful, the dip stick can get pulled into the gears and destroy the trans.

Tranny prob Honda Del Sol

this is what a automatic trans does when it is failing, it will need to be torn down and inspected for worn and damaged parts, there are any number of things that cause this, leaking valve body, front pump O ring leaking, u will most likely need it rebuilt.

1994 del Sol will go into gear and then fade out

I believe it has a screen and filter. You might have a trans problem period. Your synchronizers could be warped and the clutch cannot hold a grip. And yes, automatics have clutches. Im assuming you have automatic.

the flywheel, hub, bearing, and synchronizers have to be in perfect form to grip gears, if it's slipping out of gear which is what your fading out description means to me, than you have a trans problem or your not getting proper lubrication. Lot of the times, in a car like that, it is a common tale to tell.

hope you get it fixed.

www.car-parts.com is a good site to go for used parts for your car and others. cheap and effective. goodluck.
