Car tries to stall after travelling through very minor puddles/rain

As noted, constant rain, or even a 1 inch deep puddle, (if big enough) will splash water somewhere that is causing the engine to begin sputtering. It generally doesn't affect the system until I stop for a light or something, but then as I try to accelerate from a stop, it sputters, almost dies, and I can only limp the car along for a little while until the situation seems to slowly clear itself.

Update.. I found a couple of things that contributed ot the issue: First, I found that the Airbox for the air filter (fuel injection), had been closed improperly by the last service guy to look at it. It, not only pinched part of the air filter gasket, but also ruined 3 of the nuts that hold the screws which mount the airbox cover. The airbox top must have been out of alignment when they tightened one of the screws, because the nut had dropped, and was manually tightened without going into the "press socket". THey ruined it, and I have had to substitute new bolts (they WERE metric, at a size just below 1/4".. I included a washer at the bottom of the bolt, so that I could get a wrench on it.valve.

The next thing which may have contributed... was that one of the tubes leading from the PCV valve had broken apart and been temporarily fixed in such a way that it had broken again. I reset it properly, and immediately noticed a strong increase in power, and noticed that my engine wasn\'t working as hard as it had previously. It\'s been suggested that if the airbox was in good shape, the engine still might have had trouble with rain due to the vacuum issue weaking the intake strength, making it difficult to suck the air past /through even a bit of water.

(plus water possibly getting into that vacuum tube) Next thing is to replace the air filter. and then cross my fingers during the next rain storm.

  • Anonymous Jun 08, 2013

Had my first rainstorm and a series of puddles that would normally stall the car, but all's well, and I haven't even replaced the filter yet. I'm considering opening up the airbox (underside) a bit more and removing the sound damper from the airline going to the fuel injector system. My reasoning being that it would significantly increase airflow and performance. Still on the fence about it though.

It could be a spark plug, plug wire, or a coil. Sometimes thay break down intermittently. If it needs a tuneup, that would be the first thing to do.

SOURCE: 1994 Ford Escort dies at stops

I had the same problem a year ago. I problem was that the intake manifold gasket had a small hole and it was causing the computer to constantly change the air to fuel ratio. The constant changing cause the engine to die at stops.

I drove thru a puddle car died still wnt start 2013 Altima

Kind of depends on how fast you hit the puddle. If pretty fast, there's some water laying around from the big splash underneath, shorting out your ignition. Usually, if you just let it dry out, it will be ok. Give it a few hours if it's warm, more if it's not. The best approach to a puddle is SLOW.

My daughters 2007 Odyssey loses power in rain. It started when she went through a deep puddle coming from work at night. Now whenever there is rain it has little power.

Possible the trip throught the deep puddle soaked the alternatior when water got above the splash guard mounted on the under carrage suggest you check all of the electrical wiring amd relays to see if any are wet or are now exposed to the weather. Good luck. Fixes for deep puddle adventures can be difficult to find and fix.

I ran in to a pondle of water when it was raining now when i start my car it starts but it will cut off but i can sit there hold tha gas for a min then it be ok but sometimes it act like it want to cut off...

A car will stall when driven through standing water if the ignition system is not watertight. Worn spark plug wires and coil wire, improperly seated spark plug wires, or loose distributor cap are all possibilities.
There is a spray called CRC or some agent that promotes a water drying action can be used to dry out a wet distributor cap and wires. Drying off the electrical components will remove the moisture that is grounding the electrical energy that should normally go directly to the spark plugs.
If car will not restart after stalling from the water splashing as described in the question - and the poor condition of the electrical system is ruled out, some water may have passed through the air intake into the engine and perhaps into the cylinder. If this happens have the car towed to a repair shop where they can remove the water before any further damage results. This condition is not easy to occur but a real deep puddle can set the stage for water to be sucked into the air intake and pass through the filter into the intake and through the valves into the cylinders. This is why you see a Hummer with a snorkel - for wading through deep water.

Voltage light

This is most likely happening due to water splashing up onto your serpentine belt causing it to slip and not spin the alternator fast enough.

A possible reason as to why this occurs not and not before could be a worn belt.

Having this happen won't really hurt anything, just dont rev the engine during the drying process as you might throw the belt off.

I have a 2001 Ford Mustang with 71,000 miles. My

If you have a wet seat then it is likely defective weather stripping around the window.

Try this. If the floor is dry, then it rains and the floor remains dry, only gets wet after a drive in the rain or on wet streets, you may have a hole somewhere.

Check for holes from missing rubber grommets or holes in the floorboard or firewall from rust. Check for any rust holes or missing rubber grommets under the car or on the firewall, anywhere water can splash up into the vehicle from driving in rain or running through puddles..

Check wet spots along the carpeting all the way up under the dash, if the wet spot is higher than the floor itself, you could be getting the water from splashing through puddles.

Any holes under the car or in the fenderwell even up on the firewall can cause this problem.

First check for any obvious signs of rust, if none are found then look for missing or defective rubber grommets.

I had this problem twice and it probably is the heater core. There is a temporary fix if you can't get it changed out right away. You can get it tied off but you won't have any heat, it will stop leaking though. Does your heater work? If your heater blows cold and only blows warm when your car warms up then starts blowing cool air again that's a surefire sign.
