Battery not charging after a long run

Went to sheffield and back the other day and when we got back the battery was totally dead. Our ZXR 750 literally died as we got home.Have done a voltage test as told(by one of your good selves) and there is definately no charge going back to the battery when the bikes doing 3500-4000 rpm.Recently in first and a bit in second gear ive noticed a bit of squealing and from reading another thread wondered if the altenator belt or something like that is slipping and hence not putting the charge back towards the battery. If this is the case or the belt is totally goosed,is it an easy problem to sort out or will it be a 'shop jobby'............many thanks jeff and pam

With the squealing in first and second gear, I would suspect the noise was coming from the clutch. You may only need an adjustment, and not a replacement. If your ZXR is set up like my brother's Kawasaki EX-500 (and most other motorcycles) the alternator is built into the engine case on the opposite side of the crankcase from the transmission output shaft and there is no alternator belt. If there is no problem with the alternator windings, the problem may be in the voltage regulator. In either case, unless you are a very talented amateur mechanic and/or electrical engineer, you are better off taking it to the shop.

    Dear Jeff and Pam,
I assume you are talking about Sheffield in the UK. Have fun riding the countryside this spring. The wife and I are planning on coming over from the US next spring to visit a friend in Kensington before she shuffles off. Can you recommend a clean reasonably priced hotel in the Cromwell Road SW 7 area?

You may just have a dead cell in the battery. The battery needs to be checked under load. Most shops will do a battery check for free. At least you can eliminate the battery itself as a culprit.

1991 Kawasaki ZXR 750 battery not charging

It will be the stator or voltage regulator. You should het at least 13+ volts at the battery. The rectifier changes AC to DC.

Dead battery after a long ride

Yes, it could be the regulator. Running a battery flat MAY kill it, so try to recharge it and then load test it. Put a fully charged battery in the bike. Hook up a voltmeter and start the bike. Rev engine to about 3-4000 rpm. If your regulator is working you should be getting about 14v. If the reading does not change from what it was before you started the bike, your charging system is not working. Do test the parts before you simply replace them.
