SOURCE: 1997 Kawasaki KLX 300 how to set valve clearance

Turn the motor to top dead center and ck the timming marks to make sure you are at the tdc mark it will be the third mark on the fly wheel in the direction rotation of motor or it will have a T mark. Ck to see if the valves keepers are loose or tight if they are tight turn the motor over 360 and ck again if they have play the use a .oo4 on the intake and a .oo6 on the exhaust then ck the compression and see what you get it's should be easy you should have a little bit of drag on the gage but not to much

Yes it is low compression and can cause problems, may be a valve problem, judging by the sound, check the clearances,
really tight , burnt valve
really loose, stuck valve
No gaskets can cause that, but would generally take quite a few kilometeres.
