Question about Piaggio Motorcycles
To start, I need to pull a brake lever & press the starter button. When I do this the ign circuit goes dead, on the back (Lhs) side. On the front (rhs) the lever doesn't deaden the circuit but the starter won't operate. The back light/brake light cluster is fine when removed from the bike. The handlebar switches seem to be working when tested with a Multimeter. I think the problem is buried somewhere in the electrics. Perhaps a relay or other. Any help greatly appreciated.
Hi, Bilywalker before testing any electrical component in the Starting System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid, starter have failed or circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
14. Check for engine trouble codes.

I looked all over and could not locate a wiring diagram for your bike. Typically, there is battery voltage to only one of the large cables attached to the solenoid. The 'hot' one comes directly from the positive side of the battery, while the other cable goes to the starter motor.
It sounds like the starter solenoid is bad. To find out, simply bridge the two large cables attached to it using a large screwdriver. If the starter spins when you do this, the solenoid is bad. If the starter doesn't spin, then the problem is either the starter motor, or the cable that goes to it.

HI, LETS REMEMBER THE STARTER RELAY IS ONLY A MAGNETIC SWITCH, WHICH WHEN THE STARTER SWITCH IS PRESSED IT OPENS THE CIRCUIT AND ALOWS 12V DC TO COMPLETE THE CIRCUIT TO THE STARTER MOTOR, IF YOU BRIDGE THE 2 THICK WIRES AT THE STARTER RELAY WITH THE IGNITION SWITCHED ON, 1 COMES FROM THE BATERY, AND THE OTHER GOES TO THE STARTER MOTOR, AND YOU HAVE SUFICIANT POWER IN YOUR BATTERY THE ENGINE WILL TURN OVER AND START, THUS ELIMINATING THE RELAY, IF THE STARTER DOES NOT TURN OVER THE ENGINE WHEN YOU DO THIS IT IS LIKELY THE STARTER MOTOR ITSELF IS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY, YOU COULD ALWAYS REMOVE THE WIRE FROM THE RELAY AND PUT IT MOMENTARILY DIRECT TO THE POS SIDE OF THE BATTERY, INSTEAD OF BRIDGING AT THE RELAY, REMEMBER THAT IF THE BIKE RUNS WHEN YOU JUMP START IT, THEN THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE STARTING SIDE , AND NOT THE IGNITION SIDE AS THE IGNITOR IS CONECTED TO THE IGNITION SIDE REPLACING THIS WOULD BE A WASTE OF FUNDS. THESE MACHINES ALSO HAD PROBLEMS EARLY ON WITH STARTER MOTORS & THE STARTER CLUTCH, WHICH IS A ONE WAY CLUTCH LOCATED IN THE LH ENGINE COVER ALONG WITH THE AC GENERATOR
