Hi Anonymous, if you are talking about the starter drive gear the insides have some type of components that centrifugal forces them to grab or lock into permanently fixed counterparts. Never had one apart but the gear only spins one way and locks the other way. If you have one that spins both ways it has failed and needs to be replaced. Good luck

Starter replacement 2007 Harley Davidson flstc Heritage Softail

Hi Anonymous, before you start throwing big money away start by throwing small money away. First make sure your battery is fully charged, then do a load test anything below 9 volts replace the battery. Second replace the starter relay cheap $6. Third remove the back cover of the solenoid and de-arc/refurbish the contact plate and shoes making sure they are tight. Fourth make sure the starter drive/clutch only spins one way. If everything checks out ok then you can start throwing big money at it. Good luck

Removing starter drive on a 87 heritage special...1340 cc.

To remove the starter jackshaft on your '87 Softail, first disconnect the negative battery cable. Then drain the primary and remove the outer primary cover. At the top of the primary above the clutch assembly, you'll see the starter drive and the engagement fork. There is a spring with a cup and a pin through the solenoid plunger. Compress the spring and remove the pin. Take the spring and cup off of the solenoid plunger. You may have to take the two bolts that hold the solenoid loose to allow the solenoid to move backwards so the starter drive will come out of the primary.

To change out the drive (Bendix) clamp the starter shaft in a vise equipped with soft jaws. There is a nut on the end of the shaft that has two flats on it. Remove this nut. It has LEFT HANDED THREADS IN IT. Remove the old starter drive, install the new one, apply Loctite 271 red to the nut and put the nut back on. Reassemble the starter drive into the primary.

Good Luck
Steve

I have a Heritage Softail 87 on my way home I lost all gears, clutch feels fine, and I can feel it select gears but still no engagement of the gears, the bike also runs fine but no neutral light. Cheers...

Put the bike in gear with the engine not running. Try to push the bike. If the bike rolls freely, the final drive belt is broken. Check the tension on the belt. The only other thing that I can think of is the final drive belt front pulley has stripped out. The early belt drive bikes, the front belt drive pulley was very thin in the area where the splines were cut for the final drive gear. In 1994, Harley can out with an improved front pulley and offered a retrofit kit to replace the earlier models. When the front pulley strips the splines out, it will not drive the rear drive belt. The final drive gear simply turns inside the center bore of the pulley.

To change the belt on your Softail, you'll have to pull the outer primary cover, the entire primary drive mechanism, the inner primary, the starter, the exhaust system (to get the starter off), the rear wheel, and the swing arm. If the pulley is bad but the belt is good, you do not have to pull the rear wheel and the swingarm.

Good Luck
Steve

84 FXST Starter Kicks out before engine fires

I'd be willing to bet that it's not "kicking out". The tale tell sign is that the starter keeps running. As long as the plunger in the solenoid is pulled inward, which moves the starter drive into engagement with the ring gear on the outer clutch drum, the start will run. If the starter drive were being "kicked out" the solenoid wouldn't still be engaged and the starter would not continue running.

I would come closer to thinking that your starter drive is bad, the bendix. These things are notorious for going bad, especially the cheap Chinese made aftermarket ones. I've replaced them with only a few weeks use on them. If you buy a new drive, get an Accel, made in the U.S.A.. Simply pull the starter drive out and clamp the shaft in a vice with aluminum jaws on it. The little nut on the end has left handed threads. When you put the nut back on, put some Red Loctite #271 on it. This ought to solve your problem. If you have anymore questions, drop me a line directly at wd4ity@bellsouth.net Good Luck!

Starter drive gear wont engage on a HD fxrs

Sounds to me like the "overrunning clutch" is bad. You'll have to remove the starter and disassemble it. The starter drive is part #31663-90 according to the latest V-Twin book I have. It may have a different number on your 2000 model.

87 300ZX STARTER WILL NOT ENGAUGE. I HAVE CHECKED THE CLUTCH SWITCH AND IT IS WORKING

The starter has a thing called a starter drive. It operates with a over running clutch that is a safety that keeps it from over speeding when still engaged with a started engine. That drive needs replaced, the clutch is bad.

My starter teeth all broke off any reasons

Drive may have been engaged when engine running, like as in accidentally forgetting it was already running, or drive was sticky & stayed engaged after start up. If this is first time it's happened, I wouldn't panic, but observe flywheel/ring gear teeth when you change starter. Check for good alignment when installing new one, just to be sure. Any odd noises from starter prior to this happening?
