Question about Eton Racing 501 Basic Motorcycles
My 2009 E-ton Matrix will not start when the starter button is pressed. The battery is charged, but the starter motor just whines/hums loudly and the engine will not catch and start. The kick-start works just fine. The battery is the original so it's four years old or so. I put the batter on a trickle charger - and it indicates the battery is fully charged. The scooter was purchased one month ago and only had 4 miles on it at the time. It now as about 620 miles on it. The scooter is still under warranty. So, bad battery or bad starter motor?

Did you remove the battery from the scooter before charging? The scooter circuitry may be giving the charger false readings.
Can you try to jump start the scooter using a car and some jumper leads? If it starts that way, then your battery is dead.

Have the battery LOAD tested, a lot of times a battery will show good with no load on it but it can actualy be bad when tested under load. Also make sure your grounds are good clean and tight. Loose grounds is a very common problem with the 1200 sportsters.

The loud click kinda indicates the starter is the problem. A fainter click would implicate the starter relay as the failing component.
Since I can't hear the noise, I would say first check the starter for 12 volts from hot to ground when the ignition is in start position. If you get 12 volts upon this test, then it's most likely the starter relay.
Then check the relay for continuity with starter disconnected from it and the ignition in start position. To find these components, just trace the red cable from the battery.
More info, let me know.
P.S. The lights flicker because the battery voltage is dropping when the starter tries to turn over.

If battery and starter are as good as you say try checking the condition of the earth leads from battery to frame and any earths from engine/starter motor to frame. A corroded terminal could be the problem. Also check pos wire from battery to starter and any relay in system.
