Question about 1980 Honda GL 1100 Innerstate Gold Wing
I have to change my speedo on my 1980 goldwing. Do I have to take the whole speedo/tach gauge unit off to do this? What bolts do I take off first to remove the speedometer?

no, but it is the easiest way. i dropped the engine out of mine in about 45 min. with a floor jack and some hand tools. The only special item i had was the most excellent honda workshop manual. i took mine out going after the stator, and its right next to the clutch. i looked at the clutch and decided this was the best way for this as well. in-chassis clutch work would involve removal of the fuel cell, swing arm and all components attached to them (pain).

hi,if it is anything like a 1200,they are normal thread..ie left to undo and right to tighten, they will probably be very tight as honda locktite them in,they also have a woodruff key in them to locate the sprocket onto the camshaft, dont lose the key, they are a honda specific part and altough they are small they are quite expensive...cheers

Check your speedometer cable, detach it from the speedometer elevate the front wheel and spin it notice the inner cable if it turns or not, if not replace the cable if it spins then replace the speedometer.
