Question about Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have a 1993 Kawasaki ZZR400 and the other morning I went to the store pulled into a parking spot and the bike stopped hard like somebody put a curb in front of it. I shut it off went into the store and came back out. I tried to start it and it acts like it wants to turn over but it won't. We tried to to push start it and all it did was back fire. The other thing we noticed is it goes into 1st and neutral ok but we can't get it into 2nd. Any suggestions

From what you said, it would seem that you have got either a seized engine or gearbox, Drain the engine oil and look for small bits of metal in the oil, you should also check the oil filter. If there is nothing then you should try and turn the engine over by hand, with the gearbox in neutral. If the motor turns over then the problem would seem to be the gearbox. Sorry. Either way it will be expensive.

Zx6r 2004. Bike ran great for two months. Went out to dinner last night and came out to my bike not starting. Trailered it home, started when taking off trailer. Went for a 15 minute ride and parked it....

Hi, Matt it saddens me to inform you that you have to put on your Battery Priest Robe and prepare yourself for the Ceremonial "LOAD TEST" but before you begin, maintenance type batteries must be topped off with distilled Holy Water and all batteries must present their terminals to the battery charging altar to receive the electrical infusion of Holy Ions until they have reached a 100% full charge of 12.5 volts or better.
Below is a quick and easy test to see if your battery is in good condition or needs Last Rites and must be replaced.
1. Start by disconnecting the spark plug cables.
2. Adjust voltmeter to DC volts 20-volt range
3. Place the voltmeter leads to the battery terminals.
4. Turn the run/off switch to run.
5. Turn the ignition switch on and press the starter button.
6. Watch the voltmeter as your engine turns over for 15 seconds.
7. If the voltage drops below 9.5 volts, the battery is faulty and must be replaced.

Is it wise to buy a Kawasaki zzr400? In Fixya, it seems like it has alot of problems.

I would not buy one. It is a water cooled 4 stroke. That part is okay. What is not okay is the fact it has 4 cylinders and is 16 years old. Parts are getting hard to find, dealers generally will not work on a bike more than 10 years old, and because of having 4 cylinders, repairs are EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. $1200 for a top end job and $1500 for the gearbox. One crummy bent shift fork and you will need to go to the bank. The bike is old enough to be well ready for repairs. Find a 500cc twin cylinder bike 3 to 5 years old and you will save a bunch of cash and still have a rocket. Even if the bike were new I would not buy it due to the 4 cylinders. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

Kawasaki zzr400 after wash

spary wd-40 on all electrical connection that was expossed to water liberally.....if that doesnt do it, then you probably got water in your pulse generator system coils and will have to pull the cover off and see if theres water in there.

Kawasaki ZZR400 Won''t start, Looses power in top Gear

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, would suggest:
  • a thorough cleanup job on the carbs;
  • inspect, clean the rubber couplings from carbs to intake manifold;
  • inspect tighten coupling clamps;
  • ensure no vacuum leak when re-assembling;
  • inspect, check, ensure air intake box seating to the carbs. Very important, there should be no air leak. All air must pass through the cleaner/filter;
  • check/clean tank, including fuel valve control and built-in fuel filter;
  • use PRIM instead of ON on the fuel valve control.
And the "carborator sleeves" will only slide up when there is sufficient vacuum (engine running) and the throttle is turned.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
