Adjusting idle knob

Got feedback on adjusting the idle knob because bike keeps stalling. now, when is the right time to do it - assuming when it is warm? while it is running (if i can keep it running)?

Hi, Michael it should be noted I am not allowed to use the word "SCR*W" as Fixya considers it profane. The carburetor throttle shaft wheel has two cables the cable closest to the right side of the bike is the throttle cable and the one closest to the left side is the idle cable. Right about the middle between the two is the idle adjustment bolt. It faces out towards the air filter end of the carb . The engine should be at operating temperature with the enrichener off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the bolt clockwise to increases idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease idle speed. If you have access to your air fuel mixture bolt you may adjust it as well if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. Gently turn the bolt clockwise until it starts to bottom out "STOP" do not over tighten as it will damage the taper on the bolt, now back it out 2 full turns to establish a starting point start the engine and check the idle rpm's and adjust the idle bolt accordingly for 950-1050 rpm if necessary, adjust the A/F mixture bolt 1/4 turn at a time and let the engine settle for about 10 seconds, clockwise for a leaner mixture and counterclockwise for a richer mixture you are seeking the highest rpm your A/F bolt can acquire without going past 3 full turns from bottom then readjusting the idle bolt back down to 950-1050 rpm If you can not detect any rpm change and can not stall the engine by turning the A/F bolt all the way in then your pilot/low-speed jet is too big. Final adjustment should be made with a clean air filter mounted to the carburetor. Replace Gold idle screw on the carb and then keep turning it clockwise till its revving high, Then slowly do it anti clockwise till its idling at a low RPM which you feel right or/and defined in the owners manual.

ColdI engines require a richer mixture to operate smoothly...so they have an enricher (aka choke).
If you are finding you need to keep the choke on longer.....you may have a lean mixture than normal.nother
Start by inspecting the carb and intake manifolds for any leaks (loose fittings....cracked hoses) that could be drawing in air, leaning the mixture.

Another common issue with bikes that have sat over winter...is plugged idle jets.....the fuel varnishes the tiny orifices in the carb. You could try a product like Seafoam in the fuel tank....run it abit to get the treated fuel in the carbs then let it sit overnight...allowing time for the chemical to work. Since the bike runs fine warm...this may clear things up for you.

Drain the carb float bowl. Condensation from the gas tank has probably made its way into the bowl. If that doesn't help, remove the carb then remove the float bowl and use spray carb cleaner to clean the interior of the carb. Spray into every opening you can find.

Ensure that the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature and the enrichener knob is pushed all the way in BEFORE adjusting engine idle speed. It is possible for a properly warmed up engine to idle above the normal idle range of 950-1050 RPM with the enrichener knob pulled PARTIALLY OUT. If the bike has no tachometer attach one or attach a DIGITAL MULTIMETER equipped with an RPM INDUCTIVE PICKUP over front spark plug cable to monitor engine RPM. Then start the motorcycle engine and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature with enrichener knob pushed fully in (enrichener closed). Then set the idle speed to 950-1050 RPM using a special CARBURETOR IDLE ADJUSTER and tip. Turn clockwise to increase idle speed and turn counterclockwise to decrease idle speed. The throttle stop screw in on the right or front side of the CV carb.

When to adjust idle


If you can keep the bike running long enough to get it warm with and with no choke then that is when you should adjust the mixture,
First though start by adjusting it cold so the screw is set at about 1.5-2 turns out then run till warm set idle at around 1500 revs and adjust until it just starts to lift the revs then back off a quarter turn

How to you properly adj a 2-stroke carb on a motorcross bike to keep from fouling the plug


Heat the bike up, give it a ride for at least 15-20 minutes. in idle, try adjusting the little black knob attached to your carburetor. This will adjust your air/fuel mixture. Adjust it little bits at a time, and then wait for a second before adjusting further (to allow the mixture to change). Pay attention the idle, and how the bike sounds. Adjusting that carburetor should help.

No smooth idle and over feed.


Try adjusting the little black knob attached to your carburetor. This will adjust your air/fuel mixture. Adjust it little bits at a time, and then wait for a second before adjusting further (to allow the mixture to change). Pay attention the idle, and how the bike sounds. Adjusting that carburetor should help.

My atk 450mx stalls often

Idles high drops to normal then increases again


either a vacuum hose has come loose or is worn/cracked, or you might have a leaking head gasket.
when engine is running at a normal idle,... spray some carb cleaner around hose fittings and the intake manifolds one carb at a time..if the idle goes up..there's your problem.

Motor hard to start, but does run , but then won't idle?


if i recall yes that is, but a bike that old may need a good carb cleaning if it has been sitting around for a while

Saw is hard to start and will not idle properly


I had this issue with mine and all it took to solve it was adjusting the idle screw. Mine you would have to pull it a few thousand times (maybe not quite that many but my arm thought it was) and then you would have to get on the throttle right away to keep it running. I went right through it and nothing seemed to help so I tried adjusting the idle setting. Now it starts easier and it has not stalled on me yet.
