Question about 2000 Suzuki VZ 800 Marauder

1 Answer

2000 VZ800 marauder runs mostly on one cylinder

I just bought a 2000 vz800 marauder. it already had cobra drag pipes and has been jetted. it needed spark plugs so i changed them and the bike ran fine. after a couple days of riding i qickly found out why the plugs were shot. it now has a terrible problem with the front cylinder. it cuts in and out through all rpm ranges. mostly the bike just wants to run on the rear cylinder. the carb is getting fuel, and the plug is firing, but when i pull the plug its black with what looks like exhaust soot. definitely not oil. air filters are new. i took the carb off and cleaned it best i could but the problem is still there. the exhaust for the front pipe wont hardly even get hot. it has no exhaust preasure and at times even feels like it has suction. it upsets me that after two days of owning this bike i cant ride it. any and all help would be appreciated.

It seems there is too much of fuel going into the non firing cylinder thus the blackish spark plug, recheck the float level to that carburater and also check the valve clearance.

If the spark plug wire is bad and jumping fire across to the head and therefore the plug not firing completely would that also make the plug black like that?

Definately try a spark plug first. What does the old spark plug look like? ( white, oil fouled, melted, metallic?). Usually a fuel issue will make the inoperable cylinder very hot. Might have a loose valve guide in the head, or a bent valve.

If you bought the kit for the bike everything should be there to complete the job with instructions.

1998 Suzuki VZ 800 Marauder running on one cylinder

Hi, Michelle you need "FIVE" things in order for a cylinder to run properly:
1. FUEL: in order to validate your not getting fuel spray some starting fluid into the air cleaner and hit the starter button, if it fires up and runs for a few seconds then you know you have a fuel delivery issue. Multi carb banks should be bench "SYNC"
2. SPARK: remove the spark plug and with it connected to the spark plug cable ground the threads to something metal you should see a bluish white spark if not you have a faulty spark plug, spark plug cable, ignition coil, condenser, CKP, ECM, sensor or the wiring in between.
3. COMPRESSION: you must have at least 80-100 PSI for most bikes, multi-cylinder engines should be within 10-15% of each other if not perform a leak down test you may have a burnt or bent valve or hole in the piston or broken rings.
4. CAM TIMING: confirm your timing marks are aligned to see if the cam chain or adjuster are worn out and the chain has skipped a couple teeth.
5. IGNITION TIMING: on older bikes check to see if your points have not closed up, timing plate has not become loose and confirm with a timing light for proper retard and advance functions, on newer bikes where timing is controlled by an ECM and is nonadjustable check you CKP, TPS, MAP, O2, sensor or its counterpart for integrity.

Hi, Abgurkins and the usual suspects are:
1. Idle circuit and transfer ports clogged.
2. Air fuel mixture adjustment too lean.
3. Pilot jet clogged.
4. Faulty accelerator pump.
5. Float level too low.
6. Float bowl contaminated old fuel, water, dirt, rust, etc.
7. Float bowl vent or overflow tube clogged.
8. Fuel flow to carburetor restricted.
9. Intake manifold leak.
10. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
11. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
12. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.
13. Multi carburetors not in sync.

Check valve clearance, as vlaves wear the gap closes, most riders don't bother to adjust them till they have a problem like this.... By the way the valve may be part of the issue for backfiring while deccerating but Pipes cause this.
