Question about Harley Davidson FLHT Electra Glide Standard Motorcycles
Shifting 1st gear is ok, up for 1st is about 8 inches before connecting to the gear box
Hi Harlan check the the 3/16" allen bolt that secures the shift lever to the shift shaft for being loose. It is locatcated in between the inner primary and the transmission. Tighten it to 10 ft lbs. Good luck

SOURCE: 2005 yz 250 shifting problems
Well. I'm a motorcycle mechanic and my 2004 RMZ 250 recently did the same thing, The Shift forks inside my transmission actually bent and were not moving the gears as far as they needed to go and eventually got to where it quit shifting all together, recently also repaired a CR 125 That wouldn't shift at all and it was the shaft the shift forks go on was bent and hung the shift forks. Sounds like your shift forks are bent to me though.

sounds like the shift lever shaft broke internally. if you know enough to take it apart and repair yourself, you will firure out how the gearing works. also check shifting forks for defects, make certain thier not bent or this problem will happen again.

SOURCE: Yamaha Raptor Shifting
Well, it seems like there is a problem with the shift return spring; it's on the backend of the gear, Seems broken or not attached properly, so first of all do this check.

drain the old oil out of it and put some fresh 10w40 in there and see how it shifts then...screw this blinking light ...does the engine kick over? great!! now just start riding it,,,its a motorcycle right? if it doesn't shift because i'm not in the right rpm range i"d get rid of it.
I shift manually with a big boot. and work those gears in with the new fresh oil, it probably has a little jam between the dogs or something.once you get it fixed quickly change the oil/filter again.
tell me if this helped. thanks!
