There are many things that can make the engine to backfire.
(1) Water in fuel.
(2) Ignition timing, if it's out.
(3) Fuel level in the float chamber of the carb being too low.
What exactly did you do to it..or did it just started to backfire...was the bike stored for a long time?

I have had my gear plates fixed and I've not been on my bike for 2 weeks and all the plates have stuck again is this normal?

Hi, Sharon it shouldn't be, especially with a brand name like Kawasaki, from all the research I've done it would appear this is the norm for this model, you may want to try a set of Barnett Clutches to see if that helps otherwise daily riding or starting and gear engagement should keep this issue at bay. Kawasaki ex500

ouch. hope you weren't in it when it happened. that job will get a bit involved as, if you're referring to the engine/trans side the whole thing will have to come out and be disassembled. Depending on your expertise, find yourself a shop that will give you a break on $$ depending on how much work you do yourself. If you're comfortable with removing and installing the whole engine it'll save you huge bucks. Buy yourself a service manual from say amazon, and it'll lay the whole process out step by step.

Restoring a 1992 GPZ500s/EX500 Sometime starts

it actually sounds like you are getting air in from the rubbers connecting to motor it could be that the clamps are not tight enough or have a hole or perished on one or more.check these things first have the carbis got the right size jets in them for that bike, this can make all the difference if you are running different pipes on the bike, but i would check for a air leak. cheers hope this helps
