1998 Honda Goldwing will not start nothing.

I can't even get the neutral light to lite, other dash lights work, kickstand oil, etc. Bike was running fine put it in reverse that was fine also, took it out of reverse left it run for awhile then shut it down. Went back to start bike 10 minutes later and nothing happens, neutral wouldn't light. Wanted to go to neutral thinking maybe kickstand switch wasn't working. Checked and rechecked the kill switch also. All fuses seem fine.

This was first start up of the year. Battery did seem to run down quickly after being charged and stored during the winter months. Needed jump to get bike started.( I was told you can jump start with a car battery as long as car is not running) I left it warm up then shut it down. Restarted several times without the assistance of a jump, tried the reverse which did work, took it out of reverse, let it idle a minute or so then shut it down. After the last shut down is when it went dead, I did try to jump again to see if power was issue but still nothing. Why can't I get the neutral light to come on even when it is in neutral, it worked fine earlier today. Almost as if the reverse is engaged so neutral light won't come on. (not sure if neutral light stays on during reverse) Tried to push start the bike, but with just the wife here was impossible to do.Thanks for the quick response, just want to give you more info.

Battery checked out fine. After messin with the reverse lever several times neutral light popped on bike started great. Shut it down and same thing would happen, so work reverse lever a bit until neutral light came back on and it starts. Not sure what is in there some sensor, switch whatever, I will call dealer on Monday and see what they have to say. Thanks for all the advice, just thought I'd share what happened for anyone else that might have this problem.

BIKE WAS RUNNING FINE WHEN PARKED ABOUT A YEAR AGO BUT WHEN I TRYED TO START IT I GOT NOTHING EVEN WHEN I TRY TO PUSH START IT IN ALL THE GEARS I WOULD RELEASE THE CLUTCH AND BACK TIRE WOULD LOCK UP

Switching on the ignition, the lights come on, but there is no start-up sound of the petrol pump and it is impossible to start the bike. It is very similar as to when the kill switch is activated. The dash shows "chec" and a little oil can.

Sort of sounds like a Twilight Zone kind of problem doesn't it. I would have the battery checked for an internal dead short. This is something that happens on odd occasions and can happen even to a new battery. Yea, the little lights will work ( they do not draw much juice ), but the starter motor draws a lot of juice and a shorted battery just ain't got it. Also check the wiring harness connections. One loose connection can cause bunches of trouble.

If it is an internal short in the battery a jump start wont help. All that extra power just goes the internal short. I would not worry about the neutral light right now. You know it is in neutral just 'cause the bike will roll. Get the battery checked.

Where is the neutral safety switch on a 1998 goldwing

my neutral switch is a hit and miss. I'm just curious if it could be the battery. I let the bike sit tonight for a couple hours as I took parts off and turned on the battery the green light came on and then faded away. So I don't have a battery tester so I put it on charge and the lights is nice and bright so I turned the bike off put everything back and see if it will start so I can get to work. why would this happen sometimes and not others. Battery is 1.5 years old Decka battery. I heard replacing the switch is a big job and not a guaranty. thanks for the help

I have a 750 honda shadow ace what does the yellowo light mean on the insurment panel its yellow with a s on it

it means the kickstand is down, therefore the bike will not start while in gear but will start in neutral (the green light will be lit in neutral with key on).

Starting fault

There are two safety switches that you may need to test. 1) Neutral safety switch- this switch is what tells the bike that it's in neutral and allows the starter to engage. 2) Kickstand safety switch- this switch will not allow the bike to run in gear if the kickstand is down. My initial guess is the neutral safety switch. If the neutral safety switch is bad, then you will not be able to start the bike with the kickstand down because the bike thinks that it's in gear (even if in neutral). This also may explain why the initial intermitent problem of not starting when warm since the metal contacts will expand and possibly not make contact when warmed up. Are you trying to start the bike with the kickstand up or down? If it were the kickstand safety switch, the bike would probably start okay and then die when you put it in gear.

The neutral light never turn off, even the bike is running and when the kickstand is down the bike turns off even in neutral.2003 Buell Blast .

The neutral witch is behind the clutch and as long as it is switched on the bike will not run unless you defeat the kickstand switch.

I really recommend properly repairing the neutral light switch because taking off with the kickstand down can put you down on the pavement way too easily.

Gl 1500 SE bike wont start of push button

If you jump the solenoid and it doesn't turn over, it is probably a bad starter. But don't forget to make sure the neutral light is on and the kickstand switch is good.
