Were does speedometer cable attach to bike? have installed new speedometer everything attached but cable to bike, just bought have seached all over but not having any luck:-(
Just bought bike fixed all other problems but it didn't have speedometer or cable, now just need to attach end of cable that goes to bike.
The cable will attatch to the back of the speedo, and attatch at the front wheel. You should have a speedo spacer installed on the left side of the rim ( between the tire and the front left fork leg ) . It screws into the spacer. then there is a little locking set screw to hold the cable from unscrewing itself.

Speedometer and tachometer are completely separate on that bike. The tachometer is driven by a sensor in the crankcase, and the speedometer is driven by the rotation of the front wheel.
The tachometer electric wire may have become damaged (common problem), and a replacement wire may be bought from Harley. Also, verify that the gauge itself is operating properly by attaching a 9v battery across its wires very briefly, to see if it deflects. If the wire is good and the gauge is good, the rotation sensor in the crankcase must be replaced.
Check the transmission where the speedo cable goes into. It's located at the back of the trans. Removed the small cable retainer bolt and pull the cable out. See if the gear is broken. If it's not broken, have an assistant watch the speedometer in the truck and spin the gear at the end of the cable by hand as quick as you can and see if the assistant see if the speedo moves. If it doesn't move, replace the cable. It's most likely broken inside the housing or where it attaches to the back of the speedometer.
Your bike should have a cable driven speedometer. Look at the left side of front wheel...wheel axle is, you will see the speedometer cable attached. make sure that end is securely tightened, if it has come off, the internal cable may have slipped out. If its okay....now go under the speedometer housing and check the nut on the cable at that end...make sure its secure. Chances are it loosened off so cable was no longer engages into speedometer.
Other possibility...cable inside the outer sheath broke. A new cable is around $20 Cdn.
if all else on bike works, not a fuse problem, it would share with other components. remove and check for loose wires. if mechanical attached to front wheel, remove cable form front wheel worm gear and check if square cable is broken (pull it out)
Well I would verify the trany speed gear is "ate up" first, theres only one 10mm bolt that holds it in place, sure the area around the speedo cable is very CLEAN before removing it any dirt in there would make things bad to say the least. If you pull the cable out the gear is attached to the cable if it looks good then put it back together and remove your cluster (speedo and other gauges inside) I suggest you pick up a repair manual at a big auto store on MK1-MK2 vdubs (82-92) to explain how to remove speedo cable from back of cluster its kinda of tricky getting your fingers back there and pressing it together to get it to release. Once out drive the car and see if that cable is turning from the inside if it is then its your speedo gauge that is faulty. Grab a cluster from a scrap yard, if that cable is NOT turning then the gearing inside the trany is messed up which would mean taking the trany apart to repair it. If that was the case you would be cheaper to replace the whole trany with a used one. Good luck
