My soft tail rides really stiff on rough roads. What can I do to soften the ride. Seems like the front forks are stiff. Just had shocks serviced.


As far as the rear suspension, a softtail won't ride a smooth as one with a swingarm, as the softtail has less travel.

On the front end, Harley has three different "thicknesses" of fork oil, light, medium, and heavy, which gives different suspension dampening.

If the front forks are too stiff, you could try a lighter fork oil.

Ive got a gl1100 1982 with air front suspension q-what is the best way to change the front fork to a convensional spring fork and what forks would be the best ?

Your 1982 GL1100 has air assist type of suspension. It has springs in the front as well as the air pressure. This is a heavy bike and the front forks are marginal at best. I have had great results from installing progressive suspension springs and moving up to a heavier fork oil (20wt ) to keep the bike from diving so far during braking.

You should look at having the forks rebuilt with these parts and you will find that the bike handles much better than before.
The springs that are in the bike are old now and should be updated with new style parts.

What's a "hardtail"? What's "full suspension"?


A "hardtail" is a mountain bike that has a front suspension fork (like the one on the right) and no shock absorber in the back. Good hardtails are light, fast and responsive, and because of this they are good for climbing.
Even the cheapest mountain bikes these days tend to have suspension forks. That's not necessarily a good thing, since most of the forks on cheap bikes are of poor quality and will probably need replacing before too long. The cheapest forks also tend to be sold only on new bikes, and not separately. Find out the make and model of the fork, and search around on the web for it. The price will give you an indication of the fork quality.
Most decent bikes are sold with Rock Shox, Manitou, or Marzocchi. Marzocchi has been making forks longer than anyone and has probably the best reputation, but they tend to be expensive so you won't find them on anything but expensive bikes. Rock Shox and Manitou make lower-end (but reasonably good) forks. Other reputable brands such as Fox and Suntour make forks that may very well provide a good service life, but are not as well known for mountain bike forks. Replacement forks can be found at very low prices during sales and clearance events, so they can be upgraded later (sometimes at a bargain price). A "full suspension" bike has the front suspension fork and a rear suspension (like the bike on the right). These are highly recommended if you ride in a lot of rocks, as the rear suspension allows you to glide over rough terrain. They're also good for big jumps. The rear shock adds some complexity to the bike, and a good bit more weight at any give price point, plus there'll be a bit more maintenance. Plus, you'll pay a few hundred dollars more than a hardtail for a bike of otherwise equal components. Depending on your terrain, it might be worth it; riding a hardtail in big rocks can be brutal.

Hi, I have a new 2010 "Wheeler" mountain bike with a front suspension from "Marzocchi". On top of the front suspension on the left hand side is the termination of the front suspension locking system wire....


Sure, that fork is (as you've guessed) a Bomber 22 Lo fork. Marzocchi has a product page for it here.
The owners manual doesn't have a parts diagram, but you can use their "Locate a service center" link at the bottom of that page to find an authorized shop near you.

I have a 2003 kx 85 , It has pro tech suspension , front fork seals are leaking , would stock fork seals fit this protech suspension? How hard would this be to do myself? Ive done lots of other work on...


Stock fork seals will work but if I were you, I woudl take it to someone who has the correct tools take your fork seals out without gouging the fork leg. If your seals are leaking then chances are you're also low in fluid. Your fluid level is what decides how hard or soft your front end is (In addition to fork spring rate).

It seems that i have lost some oil from my forks due to a weeping seal, inevitably i will have to have these changed, but at the moment my suspension is spongy, and seems to tilt sharply when turning at...


The problem with topping up is that if your fork seals are leaking the benefit is short lived. There are set amounts of suspension oil required, as you don't know how much is already in the fork leg it would be impossible to judge how much to top up with. Unless you use the air gap method (140mm for 1996 >) but you would need to get the fork straight to measure the air gap correctly. The bike needs sorting properly.

Front right fork, suspension,chain guide


chain needs adjusting or new chain needed, shouldnt be that sloppy, and change both fork seals toghther, its a false economy to change just one, if you do the other will go within a month and cost you double to have the forks removed twice. these are fast bikes and need good maintenace, you would do 180mph with a dodgy fork seals and dodgy chain.

Lower suspension


Yes you can lower the suspension with a suspension link kit. You can find them from Yamaha or aftermarket from places like thumpertalk.com There is a slight front end lowering by moving the forks up in the tripple clamps but If I recall, the fork tubes taper so you might only get a few mm on the front.
