Uneven brake pad wear

Front brake pad is worn significantly more on the front that the rear and only on one side. rear outer pad worn almost out, while inner pad is still ok

there is 2 bolts on the caliper take them off and there are pad pins that need to be taken out.. inside the caliper there is a metal clip where the pad sits in.. put them in the same way they came out once you start its pretty self explainatory.. you should not have to blead them

Has the bike been lowered? If so, this decreases the clearance at the top side of the belt where it goes behind the inner primary cover. Also there may be a belt guard rubbing somewhere. Remove the belt guards and use a flashlight to look for something rubbing.

When you replace the belt, you'll be able to see anything that might be rubbing the belt. Usually there is a noise associated with something rubbing the belt. If you hear a noise, determine what the bike is doing when you hear it. Is it going up or down after hitting a bump or something? Do you only hear the noise when you've got a passenger on the bike?

Usually when a brake squeals it's because someone has gotten wax or something on the rotor. The only way to stop the squeal is to install new pads and clean the rotor with brake cleaner prior to installing the new pads. Sometimes you even have to "break the glaze" on the rotor.

You can try taking the pads out and sanding them real good. Then do the stuff I said to do above. Might work.

I have read and re-read your problem and I keep going back to the "spongy" feel, which strongly suggests air in the lines.
Make sure you have no brake fluid leaking anywhere, especially in the "tee" where your brake line splits to feed both calipers.
Even the smallest leak will allow air to be introduced.
If you are absolutely certain that you have no air in the lines, the most likely problem is one or both caliper pistons are worn and allowing fluid to leak by under pressure.
I recommend replacing the calipers- If you rebuild them, the slightest mistake honing the cylinders will result in your needing to replace anyway.
HD parts can be very expensive, so I suggest you check out Tedds in Newburgh, NY: They have a huge selection and prices are reasonable. You will need to google it because this site keeps dropping me when I try and post the link- world wide web dot vtwinmfg dot com

Check your brake pads, may be worn down to the rivets. If the pad wear is uneven from the other side, or from outer pad to inner pad, you need to have that checked for a problem with the brakes.

Uneven wear on my brakes . the rear brakes are wering unevenly


check to see if the rear end needs to be changed, this could be due to the cv axle or even alignment on the tires. and possibly your shocks so get those checked

A light in the dashboard turns on today and I have no idea what is the symbol for? is like a circle with 3 rectangles in line on each side this is a BMW 318i, 1996


This is the brake wear indicator. When the brake pads get too thin, this sensor, which is mounted in the brake pad backing on the front left wheel and the rear right wheel, touches the rotor and wears through, grounding out the contacts and illuminating the light.
Once the light is lit, you will need to buy a new sensor as well as new brake pads. The sensor is not expensive.
First step is to examine the brake pads and determine if you need front pads or rear pads or both. Don't be surprised if you need new rotors as well as pads. Check for a significant lip at the outer edge of the rotor. If the pads have worn in the sides of the rotor more than about 1/16", you are due for rotors.
You cannot go wrong with BMW branded pads. They are safe and work great, but they are really dirty. If you want to try other brands, read the reviews. Some squeak and some fade.
I use Mexican made Brembo rotors. They work well but they rust quickly, so the brakes squeak a bit the first time you press them after washing the car or driving in the rain. More expensive rotors or BMW branded rotors don't rust so much, but they cost a lot more and don't necessarily last any longer.
After replacing the pads, turn the key to the On position and leave it on for about 90 seconds before starting the car to reset the brake pad warning light.

WHy dose my brake pedal push back and make a grinding noise


Look through the openings in your front wheels and look at the front rotors-are they gouged up? You are probably running metal-to-metal, pads to rotors.
Chances are real good your rotors will have to be replaced along with new pads, but if you catch it early enough you might be able to have them machined, although nowadays that is hardly easy to get done and the savings usually is not as significant as it once was.

Why brake pads wearing uneven?


When your brakes are applied, the piston which is in behind the inner pad, pushes the pad outward against the rotor first,then that in turn basically pulls the outer pad and assembly inward for the sandwiching affect, squeezing the 2 pads together on either side of the rotor. Although there will be a little difference because of that, other things can effect how much wear difference that will occur, such as poor lubrication of the caliper slide bolts etc, as well as perhaps a partially seized caliper, or even a defective brake hose at caliper, as well as worn bushings in caliper that allow too much play, causing caliper to shift too much. Checking and keeping all those moving parts lubricated properly, will minimize uneven wear.

Unless one of your calipers is sticking or not engaging fully then there should be no reason for uneven wear unless you have a defective pad.

There will be uneven wear from the front to the back however. About 60% of the stopping power is provided by the front brakes and 40% from the rear , so your front brakes will wear faster than your rear brakes.

Rear brake pads junk rotors junk front pads full,uneven,low miles


emergency brake cable may not have been adjusted properly or emergency brake may have been partially engaged without brake light indicating such. Check brake release handle, if it makes no noise as to indicate realease, then it would have to be the e brake adjustment or frozen brake cylanders that when brakes are applied the pressure presses the shoes against the drums but does not release pressure, could be bad cylanders but not likely on both sides at the same time.
